"Yea, even Jesus Christ speaking by the voice of my servant whom I have called and chosen to be a light and a covenant to the world in these last days. Wherefore, Hephzibah, my most cherished angel, thou art called upon to assist me in cutting the screen to this window, for I heretofore seek with great diligence to know your children, and take them therewith into the wildnerness, dress them in rags, and restore every blessing lost to them before entering the glory, honor, and exaltation of my harem. Oh Hephzibah!

Smart was a regular at local grocery

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) --Elizabeth Smart was a regular visitor to a Salt Lake City supermarket after she was kidnapped and would often spend hours hanging out there, a store employee told CNN Thursday.

Her identity was not known to Erin Johnson, an employee of Wild Oats Market, until after her arrest.

Not only was Elizabeth's face covered with a veil, Johnson said, but she was "taller than I was, and I'm 20, so I didn't really think about it."

She always visited the store with two other people who are believed to be Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ilene Barzee, both of whom have been arrested and face charges of aggravated kidnapping.

Mitchell had long been an oddity in the Salt Lake area, Johnson said, and she had noticed him years before.

"He sticks out. He dresses like Jesus, completely," going so far as to wear sandals and a loincloth, she said. "He's kind of a Christian extremist. People ask him, 'Why are you dressed like that?' He's very defensive."

Mitchell was known as a panhandling transient who considered himself a prophet, according to press reports.

Mitchell, 49, was "a fairly famous transient down in Salt Lake," said Tom Smart, Elizabeth's uncle, and often referred to himself as "Emmanuel."

"He walked around in white robes. He called himself a prophet. ... Wanda, who was with him, they would beg down there. A lot of people knew who he was," Tom Smart said. (Full story)

When visiting the organic food store, Mitchell liked to recite Bible passages, she said.

"I talked to him all the time. He'd always come in drunk, usually, so he was talkative," she said. Her conversations with Mitchell were limited to "weather chat, really superficial kinds of stuff."

Sometimes he came in alone, and sometimes with Barzee, she said. He started bringing Elizabeth to the store in October.

Mitchell appeared to have total control over the two females, Johnson said. She remembered that the Barzee and Elizabeth would "never look up and never speak."

"It's our job to greet customers as they walk in and they will never say 'Hi' to you, ever," Johnson said. "They don't even look up, it's really strange."

Johnson also said the women always walked behind Mitchell.

Johnson said the three spent an unusual amount of time at the store.

"They would stay in here all the time, would stay until it closed, and then try to find a ride home," she said.

And, once, the trio lived for "a couple of weeks" at the house of Daniel Trotta, a former Wild Oats employee, Johnson said. Johnson received a ride home from Trotta once when Mitchell, Barzee and Elizabeth were in the car.

"They were in the back seat, really quiet, whispering amongst each other," she said.

A telephone message at the Trotta residence said Daniel did not want to talk to the news media.

I heard a story yesterday that he killed his kid's bunny rabbit, then cooked it up for him and made him eat it.

Sounds like 'Immanuel's' definition of 'organic food' extended to family pets.

I vote...death by dismemberment. Testicles first.

Scary how much that "manifesto" reads like Doctrine and Covenants 132. Yikes. Should give some pause for thought.

This is the first question I had. What in this Further Demented Mormon guys world was he thinking?

This guy and Joseph Simth were cut from the same clothe except JS had no screens to worry about and to my knowledge did not endorse polygamy.

And thou shalt take into thy heart and home seven times seven sisters, to love and to care for forty-nine precious jewels in thy crown, and thou art the jubilee of them all, first and last, for all are given unto thee for thy glory and honor and exaltation, even as thou art given unto them, for thou art a Queen, Oh Hephzibah! ..."

Hey, I was gonna use that line!

"I want you to be the queen of my harem." Except I wasn't going to kidnap anyone ...

All joking aside, it is gut-wrenching to think that Liz really was an "abducted teen sex slave" ... a shocking left turn in this poor girl's life.

One day she was an accomplished harpist whose entire life was lived within her extended family, the next she was being raped at knifepoint by a homeless crazy couple, the beginning of a new life, her innocence sacrificed to the demented co-delusions of this psychotic narcissist and his "wife."

Then your knowledge of Joseph Smith seems to be deficient. The reason the Mormons were run out of Illinois was polygamy.

As to the "prophecy", only those who haven't actually read the Bible would believe in a prophet in these times. Read the last bit of Revelations. The Book is finished. There will be no more prophets (and there haven't been).

I've been wondering where these drifters got their money to travel. And I'm about done with Mr. Smart. He loves the camera way too much.

The funniest thing I heard on the radio this week in Chicago was a caller who suggested that the girl might have slipped the drifter a note to get her away from the creepy father and the wraparound family.

alt alt alt Manifesto focuses on plural wives

By Jennifer Dobner
Deseret News staff writer

The rambling prophecies of Brian David Mitchell in a 27-page written manifesto call upon his wife, Wanda Barzee, to take as many as 49 sister-wives — an act that would reward the two with countless blessings.
"And thou shalt take into thy heart and home seven times, seven sisters to love and care for; forty-nine precious jewels in thy crown, and thou art the jubilee of them all, first and last," wrote the accused captor of 15-year-old Elizabeth Smart.
Mitchell's belief in plural marriage and his specific charge to his wife seem to form the foundation for a religious sect he claims to have founded in September 1997. The tenets of "The Seven Diamonds Plus One — Testaments of Jesus Christ Study and Fellowship Society" are outlined in the manifesto Mitchell called "The Book of Immanuel David Isaiah."
Smart — who was allegedly kidnapped by the couple from her home last June — is believed to have been the first of those additional wives. Smart was returned to her family Wednesday after nine months in captivity. Mitchell and Barzee are now in the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated kidnapping.

Police and prosecutors seized the manifesto from Mitchell's family members in Montana on Thursday and are reviewing it as part of their investigation of the couple. A copy of the writings was obtained by the Associated Press.
Mitchell says the purpose of his writings and of his "society is to truely, worship Him, praise Him, honor Him and glorify His name. . . ."
In it, he claims to be chosen by God as a prophet along the lines of Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith Jr. He also says his religious name, "Immanuel David Isaiah," was given to him by God. Barzee is referred to in the writings as Hephzibah.
The writings follow a pattern typical of fundamentalist religious sects, particularly those founded by former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said John R. Llewellyn, a retired Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy and a well-known expert on Utah's polygamous communities.
"It's his own special brand of Mormon fundamentalism," said Llewellyn, who has written four books on the topic and is working on a fifth about polygamist Tom Green, who was convicted of bigamy in 2000. "I had no idea he was that deeply involved in fundamentalism because of his Islamic dress. I guess he's improvised to give an Islamic blend to it all."
Mitchell, his wife and Elizabeth were seen around Salt Lake City wearing long robes. The women also wore scarves and veiled their faces.
Many of Mitchell's writings echo the words and ideas of other fundamentalists, Llewellyn said.
"Fundamentalists are great copiers. And everything evolves around plural marriage and the women. As you read this, that's the central focus," said Llewellyn, who for a time was himself a member of the Apostolic United Brethren, a Wasatch Front polygamous group. "It's basically how fundamentalists justify their lifestyle."
Like other fundamentalists, Mitchell calls for repentance and sacrifice — especially from those in the LDS Church, of which he was once a member.
Neither Mitchell nor Barzee are current members of the LDS Church, according to a statement released by the church. "Both are former church members who were excommunicated for activity promoting bizarre teachings and lifestyle far afield from the principles and doctrines of the church," spokesman Michael Purdy said.
Llewellyn said Mitchell "wants to be a modern prophet. To carry on what Joseph Smith and Brigham Young did. (Fundamentalists) all want to feel like they have holy blood. They all form some kind of delusion along those lines to give them special authority."
Each of the seven chapters of Mitchell's works are named for those writings from which he draws his inspirations.
In the first three chapters, Mitchell borrows heavily from the King James version of the Bible — particularly the Book of Isaiah — the Book of Mormon and other LDS scripture, including the Doctrine and Covenants.
In later chapters he draws from Betty J. Eadie, who wrote about life-after-death experiences, and from Avraham Gileadi's book "The Literary Message of Isaiah." One chapter is based on the writings of Orem naturopathic physician C. Samuel West. West could not be reached for comment Friday.
Eerily, the manifesto also seems to hint at what Mitchell perceived as God's plan for Mitchell and Elizabeth Smart.
"And I, the Lord God, hid up my true servant Immanuel in the wilderness, and he is in their midst and they knew him not."
Mitchell and Barzee apparently lived with Elizabeth Smart in the hills above her parents' home for several months. They then walked and lived on Salt Lake City's streets clothed in robes, going unrecognized for months.

Ok, I might stand corrected here, but wasn't it Brigham Young who started the polygamy stuff?

May I please ask who your source is for this information?
Thanks in advance.

Hey Mike, JS Jr was no prophet, just a con artist and Jesus was certainly no prophet, nor did he ever claim to be.

From the various histories I have read, it was the soliciting of other mens wives to be "part of the family" that led the people of Illinois to finally take up arms and become violent with the Mormons. The Mormons then decided to move somewhere that they wouldn't be in contact with folks who didn't share their values, hence Salt Lake City. I am sure most Mormons today have little in common with their founders in this regard. In the last 100 yrs. they have made huge efforts to "re-integrate" into America follwing a failed military effort to be separate. I don't remember the exact date, but a batallion or so of Army troops were actually dispatched to see to it that the seccessionist government that was attempted be put down (about 100 yrs ago). It took all winter for the troops to arrive and by the time they got there the folks had "seen the light".
