Then your knowledge of Joseph Smith seems to be deficient. The reason the Mormons were run out of Illinois was polygamy.

Ok, I might stand corrected here, but wasn't it Brigham Young who started the polygamy stuff?

May I please ask who your source is for this information?
Thanks in advance.

From the various histories I have read, it was the soliciting of other mens wives to be "part of the family" that led the people of Illinois to finally take up arms and become violent with the Mormons. The Mormons then decided to move somewhere that they wouldn't be in contact with folks who didn't share their values, hence Salt Lake City. I am sure most Mormons today have little in common with their founders in this regard. In the last 100 yrs. they have made huge efforts to "re-integrate" into America follwing a failed military effort to be separate. I don't remember the exact date, but a batallion or so of Army troops were actually dispatched to see to it that the seccessionist government that was attempted be put down (about 100 yrs ago). It took all winter for the troops to arrive and by the time they got there the folks had "seen the light".

"Brigham Young who started the polygamy stuff?"

I believe Brigham Young had 28 wives, but he was Smith's successor. Here is one passage regarding Joseph Smith's "revelation" on polygamy:

"In direct opposition to the teaching of Jesus Christ in Matthew 19:4-9, the Mormons embraced polygamy. Not only were they permitted to have multiple wives, they were required to do it to reach the highest heaven. Joseph Smith at Nauvoo, Ill., on July 12, 1843, made the following "revelation" concerning polygamy from the Lord:
For behold, I reveal unto you a new and everlasting covenant [polygamy]; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my [Lord's] glory (Doctrine and Covenants 132:4).
So, not only was one permitted to have multiple wives, it was demanded to progress into the highest heaven (Mormons believe there are three heaven- kingdoms and three levels in the highest of three heavens). Not only did Joseph Smith's "revelation" contradict the Bible, but it also contradicted his Book of Mormon (Jacob 1:15; 2:24; 3:5; Mosiah 11:2)."

Nope, not Brigham.

You can find their history here: www.lds.org

THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS

SECTION 132

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant, as also plurality of wives. HC 5: 501--507. Although the revelation was recorded in 1843, it is evident from the historical records that the doctrines and principles involved in this revelation had been known by the Prophet since 1831.
