Australia will go to war with Iraq within days if the United Nations process has broken down.

Prime Minister John Howard gave this strong signal yesterday as he said the issue was coming to a head.

"If the UN was removed from the equation by the resolution not being put, then obviously the UN process has ended and we would, as a Cabinet, then meet and take a final decision," he said.

The next meeting of Cabinet is scheduled for Wednesday but ministers on the National Security Committee could come to Canberra for a decision on going to war. Last night the French embassy was not responding to a strong attack from Mr Howard who blamed France for destroying any hope of disarming Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein without war.

Mr Howard earlier had joined Britain in accusing the French of a spoiling role at the UN.

The criticism was levelled during Mr Howard's media blitz to sell his case for war, following his address to the nation on Thursday.

"The French are playing a spoiling role, they don't appear to be trying to find a solution," Mr Howard said.

"They appear to be trying to advance France's prestige in the international community vis-a-vis the United States.

Howard is consistently one of the most outspoken supporters of action against Iraq; yet he does not seem to be an important part of the current "diplomacy".

I suppose there are subtle reasons for this, but I'd like the U.S., the U.K., et al to emulate Australia -- thank you very much.
