Dixie Chicks Remark Irks Country Fans

The Dixie Chicks are drawing harsh words from country music fans for remarks singer Natalie Maines made about President George W. Bush during a recent performance in London.

Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album "Home" on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide."

And I will do so by not purchasing any of their records.

Heard Liberal Idiot Bill Press this morning on WMAL. He remarked how "proud" he is of the Dixie Chicks, and how they are his new favorite group. I thought about calling in and telling him that pretty soon he'll be able to buy their CDs at the $2.99 bin at K-Mart, but I was low on Maalox this morning, so I just turned my radio off.

"Well I had been thinking of renaming them to the "Dixie Twits". "Blixie Twits" or "Blixie Chicks" works too."

I like all those names but "Vichy Chicks" is still my favorite!

"The one wearing the multi-colored tent to cover her fatness."

No wonder she doesn't Iraq bombed--if her Iraqi "tent boutique" got hit, she'd have to find a new tentmaker.

"LOL. Another FReeper, apologies to said since I forget his/her handle, called them the Blixie Chicks on another thread. I thought that was pretty good, too."

Personally, I liked the one that some other FReeper came up with:
The Vichy Chicks

Natalie has a phenomenal voice, however why the sisters let her talk when microphones are on is beyond me... she definately is very immature... she's definately not mature enough to know how to handle fame (Not that many are)...

Well, folks can always ask for their money back.

No they can't. You can't get your money back unless the show is cancelled.

Country Music Fans do not abound in the blue states like they do in the red states. My wife and I go to a lot of country shows at the Indian Ranch in Thompson, Ct and the people sitting in the stands are more likely to have an Army, Navy or Marine Corps tatoo than they are likely to be sipping wine and munching on bris.

When your main demographic is people that actually have a few values left and happen to be mostly consevative it's really not a good idea to illustrate your abject stupidity and hatred for President Bush. This shows how out of touch these people get once they aren't "one of the little people" anymore. I would say I hope they like playing at County Fairs, but I don't think they'll be much demand for them their either. Alas though, the public has a short memory and most don't really care.

Unilever Bestfoods North America Don't you know who that company is ?

Unilever bought Ben & Jerry's and still contributes (millions) to Ben Cohen ..of B & J. They could care less if the Dixie Chicks spoke out against the war..no more than MCI cares that Danny Glover, their spokesman, is anti-war on foreign soils.

She's is free to express her opinion. As long as she realizes that so is everybody else. She may not like what other people have to say about her remarks. Oh well. Everybody is accountable to what they say, including famous people. They seem to forget that.

Boy, those girls sure know their audience, huh?

I live in NH and don't know much about what y'all listen to down there-but I had the pleasure of a long drive from Tucson to home in 1999 via I-10, I-59, and I-81 and those girls were on the radio nonstop.

I suspect they are really the Hollywood Chicks posing as Dixonians-and I think their fans are gonna find something else to like pretty fast.
