PUERTO RICO: Acevedo concerned over Navy downsizing at Roosevelt Roads (Oops!)

Resident Commissioner Anibal Acevedo Vila asked the Navy Monday to look into whether downsizing operations at Naval Station Roosevelt Roads "goes beyond what is necessary and legitimate."

In a letter to Acting Navy Secretary Hansford Johnson, the resident commissioner said he was "deeply concerned about conflicting information regarding the intentions of the Navy over future operations" at the Ceiba base.

Employees at the base, and others, have charged that the downsizing ordered by the Atlantic Fleet chief Adm. Robert Natter is of a broader scope than just shutting down operations related to the training facility at Vieques. The Navy intends to end operations at Vieques by May 1.

"I want your verification that any reduction in operations at the base are directly related to the end of training at Vieques," Acevedo Vila wrote.

He also asked the secretary to clarify how the Navy intends to use Roosevelt Roads in the future. The commonwealth government, which wants the facility to remain open, is concerned that Natter is taking steps that would lead to the closing of the base in 2005, when Congress takes up a new round of base closings.

The resident commissioner asked about the process for the downsizing and said he would like to "explore opportunities for informed review by appropriate civilian authorities."

He added: "We need to agree on ways to foster better communications among interested parties concerning Roosevelt Roads to address future operations and the related civilian employees that will be affected by the reductions."The Puerto Rico government is mostly concerned about the adverse economic effect the closing of the base could have in the Ceiba region.

Every single time a spokesman for the U.S. Navy was queried about the effect that closing the Naval training base on Vieques would have on the Naval base at Roosevelt Roads, they answered that the Naval base at Roosevelt Roads would close, too.

Now, Acevedo continues this charade that the news the Naval base at Roosevelt Roads will close is a big surprise.

What a bunch of con-artists and extortionists.

Oh, they have big plans for the 24,000 U.S. Taxpayer owned acres on Vieques and the 11,000 acres at Roosevelt Roads. Those plans include a scheme for the U.S. Taxpayers to build them a $550 million dollar bridge between the two properties.

Their schemes include everything but a plan for buying the property back from the U.S. Taxpayers.

ps: In my home county, just ten years ago, 8 out of every 10 welfare dollars were going to people who described themselves as Puerto Rican.Of those dollars, as much as one third was being mailed to "accomodation addresses" in NJ, and forwarded from there to people whose actual addresses were in Puerto Rico.

This continued until former Governor Whitman (R) pushed through reform measures, which required recipients to come in personally and prove their continuing eligibility.

Needless to say, this earned Whitman the undying hatred of the Puerto Rican community - and the welfare hierarchy - (which saw reform as a threat to their constant empire building.)

Well, the Hollywood establishment and liberal NY politicians succeeded in closing down the Naval training operation. Maybe the locals can ask those intrumental individuals for the financial re-imbursement for the money they will lose for this "victory".

There have been numerous problems with the Puerto Rican locals who work in the Base Civilian Personnel Office. They hire only fellow Puerto Ricans when they are supposed to hire base personnel dependents and give veterans preference as is done at all US bases.
