I was only listening -- from descriptions in this thread, I guess Frenchy looked like a gutted trout.

Listening was good enough, though: it was not a polite bitch-slapping. Straw engaged in no diplospeak whatsoever. He seems to have had some prepared remarks, but for the most part it sounded like he handled Frenchy's points directly and extemporaneously.

(He also, a little more politely, bitch-slapped Blix and the Nuke commission.)

I think that in diplo-speak, it's very patronizing. In that rarefied atmosphere, the diplomats aren't just people, they're nations. To bring one down by using a personal name...

Nonsense. Further, I pointed out it is more evidence of non-compliance. You do know that Saddam was supposed to provide evidence of ceasing and desisting in such behavior. You do know that he uses these on real people.

The US stopped bio weapon production in 1975.

The US stopped Chemical weapon production years ago.

Johnston Atoll is where we destroy our and other countries arsenal of B/C weapons.

Congress just passed a spending bill less than a year ago where we are spending $500,000,000 on Russian C weapon destruction.

We currently only produce extremely small quantities of B/C agents for the development of protective systems. Example new NBC suit, M-22 chemical agent monitor, ICAM, NBC live agent chamber training. Yet this is ALL defensive in nature.

Even if we wanted too. The institutional knowledge on how to employ B/C weapons is lost. The US Army does NOT teach it to the NBC officer corps.

I think the point is to drive home the fact that if Saddam Hussein ever uses the stuff, it won't be for the defense of his people, because he cares nothing for his people. It won't be to defend their beliefs, because he trashed their legal system when he came to power and assassinated even his fellow Bathist co-conspirators. It won't be to preserve a free nation, because Iraq is not free. It won't be to defend his neighbors, because Iraq preys upon other nations and annexes them. And unlike other nations, he has actually used the weapons in situations in which they were wholly unneccessary, even against Iraqis... and he has already shared these weapons anfd their manufacturing process with terrorist groups instead of behaving responsibly and keeping them under lock and key.

If Hussein uses these weapons or sells or gives them to others, they will be used against Americans or Brits or Israelis or Kuwaitis, etc... that alone makes his possession of such weapons more important than if, for example, New Zealand has them, or we have them, or if Denmark has them.
