Precisely. A fugitive is much more easily and apprehended while on the run than when in a bunker.

On the weekend, when questioned about the timing of the arrest of Sheik Mohammed, Ijaz postulated that the timing was no accident. We have known for some time where the Sheik was and could have apprehended him long before now. Ijaz speculated that his capture at this juncture was part of a larger strategy just being set into motion. Ijaz didn't elaborate on what he thought this strategy would entail, but the apprehension of more kingpins, including OBL may be part of the orchestration.

Could be that the net has been set around quite a few of the hunted and they are being flushed out? The fact that these manhunts are bearing fruition with days of a possible attack on Iraq also makes sense. Get everyone focussed on the war on terrorism, get the Islam terrorist element, inc. Saddam, in a turmoil so they can't inflict much damage, then strike with everything we've got.

Makes sense to me. We'll see.

I've no doubt that the administration is doing everything possible to find him in case he is alive, but I am still of the opinion that he is an unidentifiable smear of dusty red paste under a few tons of rock in a cave some where. I mean a guy who couldn't stay away from a video camera for more than a few weeks suddenly can only make written (LOL) and audio statements. The only alternative explanation is that he was disfigured/blinded etc. in the Tora Bora attack and would therefore not be an effective rallying force on video.

I was of the mind to think him dead at one point, but I'm not so sure as of late.

There is another alternative explanation. Sheik Mohammed appears to have an altered appearance, whether it be from disguise or having gone under the knife.

If bin Laden is utilizing this tactic also, it would not prudent to give videotaped messages showing off your new look.

He was drinking, whoring, and generaly living a life of self indulgence. All of this strictly forbbiden by the Quaran. To me it's an indication of weakness of the flesh, and a general weakness of will. No real religious convictions at all. These type of people are always the first to start singing. They think world revolves around them first and them only. He do whatever it takes to make things less painful and more comfortable for himself.

People forget that Ijaz, who played interesting derivative games with his Crescent investment group, whose father was a nuclear physicist and who knows all the nuclear players in Pakistan, was working his own deal in the mid-nineteen nineties to get a piece of the petroleum action in the Sudan. He worked with the Islamist government there, tried to influence Al Gore, spent hundreds of thousands on Democrat causes, and now -- lo, has found a new cash cow, Fox TV. If they come up with OBL it must be grease spot he left at Tora Bora.

Good point. I admit I have believed that OBL died at Tora Bora, and the reason I believed it was because our top brass kept implying it, without actually saying so one way or another.

It was to our advantage for OBL to think we believe he is dead. OBL could become complacent and make a mistake, although he has proved himself extremely wily in the past.

It would be a tremendously positive precursor to action against Iraq to have the world see OBL in handcuffs.

It's likely that OBL was traveling with his band of thugs when we hit Tora Bora. If his number two guy survived OBL probably did as well. IMO Ijaz is the best analyst out there.

Well, yeah. But warriors of God, martyrs authorized by their religion, are given a lot of leeway in this.

The church of Rome used to grant prior absolution for any and all sins committed while on crusade, away from priests and last rites. This did, of course, did seem to lead to a lot of rape and pillage and massacre. The same thing happened in the Schism with the dueling popes fighting for control of the Roman church. The warriors of God refused to fight for the pope unless they had all their sins forgiven in advance.

I'm a cynic too but I'm hoping he's turned over a new leaf. Or at least that he's right about imminent capture of OBL. But I'm not counting on it.

I think he has been very credible. When everyone was calling him a crack pot when he said the war hero refused to take assama he proved to be right.

Also, he has said that Khalid was under surveillence for a while before he was nabbed.If so, they probably took note of who the curriers might be for messages and stuff.If you catch one of these low level ragheads. I'm sure a few fresh American greenbacks will replace those 72 virgins dancing in their heads.

I heard on KSFO San Francisco this morning that there was an article in the Asia Times, published sometime in October, that Sheik Mohammed was killed in an apartment fire. I also vaguely remember a thread on this board that there is some question as to whether he had been killed some months earlier. Anyone remember that? Or should I look for my tinfoil hat?
