I went to the site and read the entire article. It mentioned nothing about his staying at the site and using sonar.
Apparently there is anoter article which describes in greater detail what he did. If there is then I am unaware of it.

There's a link to video stream on that same site. You can see Garcia and his engineer friend with the sonar equipment as well as shots of the cement and more.

Apparently there is anoter article which describes in greater detail what he did. It's actually a visual description from a FReeper. Good as gold. While it's possible the "device" is not a sonar, it is quite clear they did not pick up and leave without investigating further.
