Rogers was an unseen puppeteer in "The Children's Corner," a local show he and Josie Carey launched at WQED in 1954. In seven years of unscripted, live television on the show, he developed many of the puppets used in "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," including King Friday XIII, Daniel Striped Tiger and Curious X the Owl.

Mountaineer was kind enough to transcribe the lyrics to the opening and closing themes for this show on this thread: Memories of Growing Up in the 40's and 50's (and since, even). In fond childhood memory of The Children's Corner and Mr. Rogers, I am posting the lyrics to the closing theme here:

Mr. Roger's was my favorite as a child. When I was really little, my dad worked 1st shift and would get in time to sit me with him on the floor and watch Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.

Liberals can rightly point to Mister Rogers and Sesame Street as two of the great successes of Public Television. It's painful to imagine those shows broken up by commercials for action figures and sugary cereal.

You are so right. Kids have short attention spans anyway, and commercials telling them to beg mom and dad for this or that would have ruined Mr. Roger's and Sesame Street.

I checked into this thread because I felt guilty for not ever letting my kids watch Mr. Rogers...seems they missed a good one. Sorry to hear of your loss, clamper, it's nice you were able to stay close to your inlaws after the loss of your wife. Stay well!

Sorry to hear this- I'm too old to have really appreciated him but he always seemed like a pleasant man and as far as I can tell, his influence on kids was positive. May he rest in peace.

Fred Rogers is an example for each one of us who admired him. He left this earth, with only praises of his character. That is rare. He was rare. He was real. He was an example of love toward everyone and a person to trust. That is rare. WE are blessed to have experienced him.

When my kids were in school, I even sat and watched Mr. Rogers. He was that kind of man. You felt good just to hear him.

On WGN RADIO today, they talked of Fred. Spike O'Dell (the morning guy) said they would post an interview he had with MR. Rogers this past December just before he found out he had cancer.

Oh your not breaking my bubble. As far as politics go...and a few other things I won't go into here...Mr Rogers and I (and most conservatives I would think) were not on the same page.

Still he accomlished more than most of us, and I acknowledge that even though I disagree with his basic philosophy.

Anyone know who Mr. Roger's son is?

According to a different article that reports Mr. Roger's passing: "Rogers is survived by his wife, Joanne, a concert pianist; two sons, John, who lives in Kansas, and Jim of Pittsburgh; two grandsons, Alexander and Douglas; and a sister, Elaine Crozier of Latrobe."

Once, in an interview when someone asked him what set him apart from pepole like Captain Kangaroo, he said "Well, I have a large selection of Butthole Surfer CDs."
His son is the lead singer.

I never heard of the band you mention, but a Google search turned up a reference that names somebody else as lead singer. Can you provide a link to a different source that verifies your information?

He was real, and he really liked kids. And we knew it.

A good man has died. I knew several people that knew him personally and worked with him. No one ever said a bad word about the man. I believe that he was good to the core and was someone we should all try to be more like.

To give you a good idea how far society's morality has slipped over the past couple of decades. On 104.3 (radio station in Baltimore) at around 2pm, both disc jockeys were doing everything they could to make light of what and who Mr. Rogers was. After hearing these idiots laugh I decided this particular station was on my "Not to listen to" list. But then what do you expect from a station owned and operated by Clear Channel.

Dollars to donuts they are both flaming libs. Guess we can only hope that eventually these types of folks and what they stand for, will eventually fade off into oblivion.
