WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House sought to have an administration official counter Saddam Hussein's claims in an interview with CBS' Dan Rather, but could not reach agreement with the network on the right person to do it.

Much of the interview was airing Wednesday night on "60 Minutes II."

CBS News Anchor Dan Rather (L) conducts an exclusive interview with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (2ndR) in Baghdad on February 24, 2003. U.S. President George W. Bush on February 25 emphasized his intention to bypass the United Nations and attack Iraq if necessary, saying approval of a new U.N. resolution was not essential and only Iraqi disarmament could avert war. The interview will be broadcast on the CBS news program '60 MINUTES II' on February 26. Also pictured are two unidentified Iraqi officials. REUTERS/CBS News/Handout Copyright 2003 CBS Worldwide Inc. "The show responded that "unless it was the president of the United States, the answer was no," Fleischer said."

Arrogant CBS jerks...

I wonder if the good people in Washington are starting to go after CBS. What with Zell Miller's speech against CBS President and now this I think it might be true.

Don't forget Bush Sr.'s spat with Rather some years ago, too. Rather doesn't like the Bushes too well.

Genelius said the administration countered by offering either Fleischer or White House communications director Dan Bartlett, which the network deemed inappropriate for the show. At that point, the discussion seemed to end, she said.

LOL.... The White House is SOOOOO impressed with the Dan Rather interview that it offers its "communications director" to respond to Saddam.

The only worse choice from CBS's point of view would be for Bush to send over some 17 year old student intern.

I don't think the Bush family has forgiven Dan Rather for his attempted ambush of Bush Sr. in the '88 election. [or was it '92?]

Would CBS offer the same conditions to our country that they offered to Saddam? The same control?

Maybe CBS doesn't respect leaders who don't torture, kill and rape their citizens.( On a lighter note, does this explain why Rather liked Clinton sooooooo much?)

Do birds of a feather flock together? Is Rather a bird brain?

I'm so sick of liberals.

The little guy in the middle made the following statement:
"On one side of me is a man who hates America and all its institutions, and who has engaged in vicious propaganda for more than two decades. On the other side of me is Saddam Hussein."

CBS uses the American Publics airwaves to make money. The least it could do would be to let the People's government respond to this mass murders disinformation.

Whatever happened to the Dan Rather who cried like a baby on Letterman and said words to the effect of, "If the president asks me to jump, I will ask how high"? Now it's, "Give us Bush, Cheney or Powell" or go jump in the lake."

The White House should send a Bush Lookalike to rebut Rather's interview with the Saddam Lookalike. ;-)

Let's see if I understand this. CBS is airing Iraqi propaganda (i.e., they bought into Saddam's condition they he tape, produce, script, and edit the interview) but won't give the White House any latitude. Is this correct? If so, CBS must be considered a serious enemy of the U.S.

It was not the first media warning from the White House.

Asking for rebuttal time is a media warning?

CB...what?

And who's the two old farts in the picture? One looks vaguely like this guy that used to be on a TV station I watched.

Did anyone see the interview?

I just saw a clip and that son of a bitch Dan Rather called Hussein "Mister President." What a piece of work he is.
