4 out of the 8 were for the album, not the single. 2 out of the 8 didn't go to Norah herself, but to the producer (for producer of the year) and writer of the song of the year. I think in this case, the Grammys were awarded more for artistic merit than narcissism. If they wanted to award that, they would have given the Grammys to Eminem.

LOL! I think she has only one video out for "Don't Know Why." I don't blame you though. She does have a DVD coming out tomorrow for $15 (or less on sale) of a live performance in New Orleans which includes the video. :-)

Now let's hope she doesn't open her mouth to say something stupid like some of the other artist have been. Could ruin her raging popularity here, I would think.

I don't understand why they put her in the pop category. She's a jazz musician.

Jazz is back, baby!

When she debuted last year she was being touted as a jazz artist, but I and two other friends who were serious jazz fans (one's a working musician and the other a published photographer) went to see her and walked out of the show at intermission.

Even on the standards, she was "countrifying" them with this barrelhouse piano style and twangy Nashville guitar that set your teeth on edge.

I don't know what all the fuss is about.

It's still 8 awards for one song... A little excessive, don't you think?

I was reading this morning that Diana Krall won in the jazz category. Maybe that's why they put Norah in the pop-jazz category.

And does anyone know if the Dixie Chick's version of Landslide came out before that time? Whatever. They'll be sure to get consideration for Travelin' Soldier. What a great song that one is.

After, I believe, but I could have been sure that "Landslide" was nominated for four or five Grammys.

>>>Doesn't anyone have a problem with her receiving 8 awards? 8? For one song? Granted, the whole album may be good...

As mentioned in the original post, the awards weren't for "one song." Again, among the awards she won:

Pop Vocal Album (Award for non-instrumental album that had significant sales--making it popular.)
Engineered Album, Non-Classical (technical producing award)
Female Pop Vocal Performance (female singer award for technique, style, etc.)
Best New Artist (self-explanatory)
Record of the Year (Award to the Artist and to the Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s) and/or Mixer(s), if other than the artist.)
Song of the Year (A Songwriter(s) Award. A song is eligible if it was first released or if it first achieved prominence during the Eligibility Year. (Singles or Tracks only.)
Album of the Year

>>>8 awards, rather than have others get their due.

That sounds awfully liberal. Excellence should be awarded. Are you suggesting that other, less deserving artists should have been honored--just to be fair? Oh, my...

>>>This is one of the reasons I NEVER watch this trash.

No offense intended, but I hope you don't make all your decisions so adamantly, on such faulty premises. (In this instance, it's not 8 awards for 1 song...but rather, awards in 8 different categories, rewarding achievement and excellence using a wide range of criteria.

>>>Award shows sicken me - the Academy awards, and the grammys. What other industry do you have people who work in it giving each other awards for the work they do? It's not sufficient to receive millions of dollars for their efforts, they have to have a national audience where they give each other awards for this!

Generally, I agree with you. But almost every industry has award ceremonies...it's just that the Teaching Award Ceremony, Architectural Design Awards, JD Powers Automobile Awards and the International Plumbers Association Awards don't make very good television. There's no question that, by definition, all of these industry award ceremonies are narcissistic--and most of the shows are not worth watching. The Grammy Awards are a little different...

But back to the "others should've gotten their due" concept...That's reminiscent of the libs who don't want a Valedictorian in each graduating class, because it hurts other students feelings. It also reminds me of some school systems who want kids to play games where nobody loses, (i.e., there's no winner) in an effort to make the kids feel good because one kid keeps winning all the time. Again, I'm not busting nads here, but just as many people think they're liberal but actually hold conservative beliefs; there are many out there who are much more liberal than they'd like to believe.

Yes, I wish we showed a bit more distance and perspective when it comes to these self congratulatory affairs designed from the getgo (D'uh!) to sell more of those $18.98 CD's of mostly filler material. Instead, the "perspective" we get are sincere explanations of alleged differences between "record of the year", and "album of the year" as if these were natural, godgiven distinctions and not cynical, artistically and logically meaningless commercial categories!

I bought a couple of albums last year that would knock you off your feet, I guarantee, and that will never be recognized by this overfed self centered industry.

Mr. Durst's, um, statement. What the hell is agreeance? A good rule of thumb for public speaking - If you are compelled to make a statement which will subject you to the ridicule of the chattering classes as a result of your lack of education or intellectual standing to make such a statement, at least use proper grammer. If you can't use proper grammer, at least use real words.

Great for Norah. It is so rare for the Grammys to get anything right. This year among the nominations, Norah deserved to win everything.

Of course, the best album of the year did not get a single nomination.

Glad to hear Ms. Jones did so well!

I bought her album in October or November I think.

Heard about her on NPR no less! They preview music on ATC reguarly, not so popular stuff. Recently heard about Johnny Cash and his new stuff, have to get the album.

Is that right her father is a big peacenik and played at the Monterey Pop Festival and that one of Norah's songs is the anthem of this anti-war crowd? Sounds like another Sheryl Crow.
