Outgoing California Republican Party Chairman Shawn Steel ripped Assembly GOP leader Dave Cox on Friday for saying publicly that he would not support efforts to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis.

The controversy breathed new life into Cox's remark Tuesday to the Sacramento Press Club that he doesn't think the recall is a good idea and could distract from efforts to solve the state's massive budget crisis.

Cox and Brulte feel that a recall would delay getting a budget passed... :-\ .. thus would be counter-productive.

I do not believe the California Republican Party, as an organization, should be the primary driving force in the recall effort," he (Cox) said.

I agree. Davis won the election as a Democrat. If the Democrat's want him to continue to destroy the state,...fine. Then we'll do what's right and win the state back in the next election.

The 'budget crisis' is a load of CR@P, created by Grayout's spending and 'social' programs. He lies about how many staffers he has on his payroll (claims about 80, but 115 more are sucking funds from 'local' monies), California MediCal and homeless programs are rife with fraud and their administrators get new cars and six figure salaries with raises every year - that's why we've got the problems we've got. And let's welcome MORE illegals to cripple our hospitals. We're screwed here - SF and Hollywood outvote reason every time. The recall effort will fail, most assuredly, but I DON'T CARE - I am supporting it, attending rallies and distributing petitions. I want him to know that if you are not in Hollywood or some elite post-Hippie a$$hole, WE DESPISE YOU AND WANT OUR STATE BACK!!

(is this considered a rant?) ;)

it would be very stupif for the cali gop to support the davis recall effort..

think about it..

even if the recall is successful, there is not certain the next gov for cali is a rep. - it could well be the lt. gov or the attny general of cali right now

bit what if the recall is unsuccessful, the gop will risk being viewed as

a party wanna overturn a legit election - like it or not, davis won fair and square in 2002...would the cali gop wanna be looked upon the party running against democracy or worse..the party of sore losers?

then there is risk of davis can turn his negativity towards the gop...davis can blame he can't solve the state budget issues cuz he is distracted by the recall efforts..he can easily flip the anger of his incompetence towards the gop citing they are obstructing his efforts to solve the state's crisis...

then even if (huge if) the recall is successful, a new givn for cali is a gop'er...the state's budget issue wont go away...the govn will have the thankless job of raising taxes and cutting services..it is not gonna be easy..so why install an unpopular gop gov post davis..

looking into 2004 - the gop will be better off to have a hugely unpopular davis - imagine davis's approval ratings in the 20s and 30s...it will make the state competitive in both presidential and senatorial campaigns..bush may not need to win cali to secure his 04 chances, but as long as he is within striking distance of winning the state, it will force the dems to spend time and money in the state..this will hurt the dems in the midwestern states which will once again be very competitive for both parties in prez 04 campaigns..

so there is huge downside for the davis recall effort, the upside is much less so..so why not having a wounded davis instead of risking the backlash/backfirings against the gop due to the effort..

jmho...

Correct. Recall elections are meant (I believe) to deal with circumstances voters were not aware of during the last election.

Why have a recall statute if it is never going to be used?

Why should those of us hanging on for dear life here financially in California have to suffer more and more?

Why don't we recall the Parskyites in the CAGOP instead?

Why even care then?

I'm not trying to pick on you or anyone expressing those sentiments you described. There is no guarantee that the demRats will be the recipients of blame for this mess or the ire of voters as a result, or at least the ones that show up to vote.

Yeah, let's just wait for the ship to capsize. I gotta go rearrange my deck chairs. :-)

You California Republicans who are involved with this are absolutely, positively irresponsible.

This borders on anarchy. Don't you think the rats will try the same thing (Some day maybe in my state thanks to you clowns) if THEY don't like the ELECTED officials of their states???

You morons just HAD to have Bill Simon (The ONLY person I can think of capable of losing to the SURE LOSER, Gray Davis) now live with it!!!

I cannot stand Davis, however all the important seats in the state government are democrat, If the recall is successful only a democrat replacement would be reasonable. I would not want to see a republican take the governor responsibility, that person would get the blame for anything that went awry. Let the democrats stew in their own made beds!

How many times does the Bush Strategy have to win and the Daschle Strategy fail before the Simple Simon Republicans figure it out.

Daschle and the entire Democratic senate and house campaigns spent the election trashing republicans and Dubya Bush. In the mean time Dubya and Karl Rove spent the entire campaign pushing fixed for domestic and foreign problems.

The voters for the first time in 100 years increased the number president's party seats in congress.

Meanwhile a Simple Simon spent a campaign attacking Davis instead of proposing fixes for problems, and got beat by the weakest Democratic candidate in 100 years.

Having learned nothing many of the stupid Repubicans think they can win if they only attack DAvis harder and try to recall him.

How many times does it have to be proven before the California Republicans figure it out.

In bad and dangerous times the party that proposes fixes wins. The party that attacks it's opponents loses.

If I were consulting Gray Davis, I would tell Gray his best hope to escape voter blame for the State's mess would be to get the Republicans to try to recall him!

Is it just me, or does anybody else find it hard to believe that Davis honestly misspent 45 billion dollars in a few short years? Where's the money?

The media covers what it wants to cover. That you didn;t hear anything from Simon about solutions, and he did propose quite a few, BTW, never got airtime. I wonder why?
