The Homeland Security Department yesterday added paper towels, cotton shirts and table salt to the items Americans should lay in against a nuclear, chemical or biological attack.

Even a good pair of running shoes is a good idea.

"Don't be afraid," Tom Ridge, the secretary of the Homeland Security Department, said yesterday in Cincinnati. "Be ready."

Gee, Tom, not a word about protecting our borders, where 2000 people will make it across tonight, while we capture 2,000 others. Not a word about when the deportations begin for the massive amounts of illegal aliens already here.

Not a word about when the pilots of our commercial jets are finally going to outfitted with guns.

Not even the truth about what potassium iodide can or can not do for you. Not even a mention about Cipro against anthrax. No, just stash the duct tape--we didn't mean it, you know.

I can't believe this clown is in charge of protecting us. We are in for a world of hurt.

Another sterling example of the Peter Principle. Ship him back to Pennsylvania--yesterday. Next.

The man is daft, stupid or obtuse. Help me, Tom, which is it?

Some tips from www.ready.org:

Household chlorine bleach You can use bleach as a disinfectant (diluted nine parts water to one part bleach), or in an emergency you can also use it to purify water. Use 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

Shut-off wrench, to turn off household gas and water. I've got to go outside tomorrow and check if I remember where our valves are. This is always good to know in earthquake country.

A whistle to signal for help -- not a bad idea if you live in an apartment building, in case of fire, earthquake, or terrorism.
