The Homeland Security Department yesterday added paper towels, cotton shirts and table salt to the items Americans should lay in against a nuclear, chemical or biological attack.
Even a good pair of running shoes is a good idea.
"Don't be afraid," Tom Ridge, the secretary of the Homeland Security Department, said yesterday in Cincinnati. "Be ready."

Household chlorine bleach You can use bleach as a disinfectant (diluted nine parts water to one part bleach), or in an emergency you can also use it to purify water. Use 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
Shut-off wrench, to turn off household gas and water. I've got to go outside tomorrow and check if I remember where our valves are. This is always good to know in earthquake country.
A whistle to signal for help -- not a bad idea if you live in an apartment building, in case of fire, earthquake, or terrorism.
