MADISON, Wis. -- After getting a phone call from her 20-year-old son who is stationed in the Middle East, a local mom began collecting chapstick, lotion and batteries to send to soldiers.Zack, an Army specialist with the 3rd infantry, told his mom that soldiers desperately need lip balm and lotion for dry skin, reported News 3's Toni Morrissey.
"I could just see them all sharing it -- I pictured everyone passing down either the lip balm or the lotion, and I realized there is no way my two boxes every three weeks is going to cover the thousands of guys who are over there," Rose said.
A local credit union found out about Rose's story and has been collecting donations for the troops. The credit union has taken charge of making sure the supplies are boxed up and mailed and get to our troops in the Middle East.

It is my guess that for security reasons the US military will be forced to turn down these well-intended gifts. The possibility of sabotage is too great.
While the deeply appreciated the sentiment, for the same reason, the military has asked in the past that cookies/candies not be sent to troops.

I hope it works out.
I would be nervous about asking my son to use products sent to him from unknown people.....remember the Tylenol scare of a decade ago?

I'm a 20 year Army retiree....a chaplain. I fully agree with supporting our troops.
Two of them will likely be my own sons. Now THEY will get care packages....from HOME!

It is my guess that for security reasons the US military will be forced to turn down these well-intended gifts. The possibility of sabotage is too great. It seems this woman is soliciting items to send in packages to her son who will share with his unit. I'm assuming she will inspect anything that is sent to her, but it makes me uneasy to think of strangers sending stuff to this woman, who is forwarding it on to our troops.
Xzins, you are right. Servicemembers have been instructed NOT to accept packages or letters from people they don't know. Military post offices will return the items to the sender.
But there is a way to send stuff to deployed troops through the USO. This article explains "Operation USO Care Package". Individuals and corporations may participate.
Also, email messages may be sent to a random servicemember's inbox through Operation Dear Abby or AnyServicemember.org.

Thanks, AJ.
It's sad that some would seek to harm our troops by sending sabotaged packages, but it is a possibility that cannot be overlooked. Better safe than sorry.

We are members of OI (OperationInterdependence) w/ monthly box filled w/goodies & letters to 50 guys of the 15th MEU in the middle east. Security IS the #1 concern-so ALL products that will touch the skin must be sealed by the mfg. Other guidelines also apply.

Im sure our servicemen and wooman will enjoy the fact that YOU dont want attention drawn to their needs over a states list and im almost sure that we have servicemen and women from all fifty states ready to fight for your freedom to cry about the same amentioned so called abused list.

Just because YOUR post is about a good cause and of national interest does not justify abusing state lists just to get it more attention than it would if posted to the appropriate national categories.
If everyone posted as you have when they thought that THEIR issue was REALLY important, the state lists would be useless.
Next time, if you feel your article won't get anough attention by following the rules, please abuse "breaking news" for a change.
