***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Posted on 02/16/2003 8:19:33 AM PST by SamAdams76

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

Looks like the snow shovel i packed will come in handier than i thought!

A couple of weeks ago, we drove over to Apache Junction Arizona to hook up with some Minnesota relatives who have a little mobile home retreat there....most everybody who is in this park has Minnesota license plates, and all their little yards are decorated with what wifey and I call "Yard art" (a midwestern phenomenon?).

We saw at least a dozen snow shovels on display, with little signs attached, along the lines of "Retired". Cute

Down here in central SC, we've dodged a bullet. It's 37 and raining pretty hard. However, go two hours north of here to Greenville/Spartanburg and Charlotte, and they're calling for 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice accumulation, and that's ALL they need in Charlotte. They've already gotten slammed hard once this year by a huge ice storm.

Where my mom lives in central VA, 2-4" snow PLUS 1/2 to 1 inch of ice. And where I went to college in Harrisonburg, VA, over in the Shenandoah Valley, 1 to 2 feet by tomorrow with 3 feet in the mountains. I predict there will be no beer on the shelves in Harrisonburg tonight! :)

In general, all up and down the east coast, it's a good day to stay inside in front of a warm computer and surf FR!

I haven't been able to confirm it - but it would not surprise me.

The state website says nothing, the News Journal site says nothing and my local news' website is down, and the news doesn't come on for another 10 minutes or so.

It wasn't supposed to start snowing here in Chester County until this afternoon. Well, I woke up today looking at 6" or so and still coming down strong.

I'm in East Vincent (outside of Kimberton/Phoenixville) and it suprised me when I woke up at 7AM and saw it snowing. The weather people cannot predict accurately. I expected to have the morning to go to Mass and run some errands (would have done it all last night if I knew...). I took a ride to drop a package in the FedEx box and the roads were covered, but not too bad yet.

We don't have nearly the 6 inches at 11:30AM that you have, but perhaps 3 in. Went out and shoveled a path for the dog and it's very light snow. We have a Chihuahua and it only takes a few inches and he can't get through (or won't try) - poor little guy. (If I were him I wouldn't try either if I'd end up with frozen gonads.) Next time I get to pick the dog and it will be a "real" dog (not a rat disguised as a dog).

I'm in northern NJ--(moved from Manhattan last August). We are in northern Morris County in the Kittatinny Mountains (well, they USED to be really high--a coupla billion years ago they were as high as the Alps--much more modest now).

At any rate, we expect between 1.5 and 2 feet. Went to Home Depot this AM and picked up some professional grade de-icing salt (the calcium kind) and a 50 pound bag of sand. I mix them together in equal parts for my driveway (it is steep uphill to the road and a j-curve to boot!).

We don't have a snowblower--why would we with 3 healthy daughters?

We have about 13.5-14 inches in Round Hill Virginia. Just east of the Blue Ridge.

Mt. Weather is conducting a search right now for one of their security people who turned up missing while walking the fence @ 10:30. Hope they find the guy soon.

That looks like a Maltese--we have a Bichon who loves the snow, and you're right--it's easy to lose her!

That is good to know. My office is in East Vincent. Right over Black Horse Hill on Route 100. We won't even be attempting to go in.

I live in Harford County Maryland (northeast of Baltimore along I-95). Woke up at 0600 hours this morn and snow was just starting to fall (Got 6 inches of snow yesterday). Went to Mass at 0800 hours. By 0900 hours when leaving Mass there was 4 inches of fresh snow on the ground. Has been snowing heavily since then. Have not measured but looking at the cars outside it appears to be at least 8 inches right now. Have lived here since 1995 and have not seen more than a couple of storms like this in that time. Having grown up in New England I recognize this type of storm. This definitly feels like a northeaster. Damn I love this stuff (its in my blood). Go Red Sox!!

I thought more snow in your area and less snow in my area which is NWCentral....we only have a weather advisory now...they are forecasting 6-8 more inches for us by midday tomorrow. We dodged the ice.
