BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland's first Amber Alert was canceled Wednesday after police said the father of a missing 2-month-old girl fabricated a story that she was taken by an unlicensed taxi driver. Police continued to search for the infant, A'Shia Jenkins. They declined to say whether the father, 20-year-old Kenneth Jenkins, is considered a suspect in Tuesday's disappearance.
Jenkins told police he got into a taxi with A'Shia and her twin sister, but the driver pulled over several blocks later and demanded money at gunpoint. The father told investigators the driver told him to get out, and he was able to escape with one child before the car sped off.
Maryland issued an Amber Alert, relaying information about the case through radio and television broadcasts and electronic highway signs. The alert is named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old Texas girl who was abducted and killed.
But the alert was canceled because of "inconsistencies" in Jenkins' story and information uncovered by authorities, police spokeswoman Ragina Averella said.
State police received "innumerable" reports from motorists who spotted the white, four-door Honda Accords described by Jenkins. Detective Donny Moses said police did not have any regrets about issuing the alert.
"I think the issue is a 2-month-old baby," Moses said. "That's the bottom line."

Man, traffic was a mess getting home last night because of this. The beltway has overhead electronic signs that show traffic alerts and they all were broadcasting the lookout for a white Accord, including the partial tag number. Of course, drivers slowed down to read the signs and this caused backups all around the beltway. It was awful. Took me 1.5 hours to get home from a "normal" 45-minute commute (Bethesda to Crofton).

Or forgot it when he left the car, and made up the story so the kids' mother wouldn't kill him? Or maybe there never was a twin?
On yesterday's thread some eagle-eyed freeper said there was something not right about this story. I couldn't see why, but obviously s/he was right.

No, he beat her to death for crying or wetting her diaper. We see this almost every day.

I didn't want to jump the gun yesterday, but I smelled something fishy when the description given of the cab driver mentioned what color shoes he was wearing. Who knows what color shoes their cab driver is wearing?

The mother is probably a low-life scumbag too.

She had children with this doofus. They are not married and probably both sucking down the taxpayer dole.

Lots of people just assume that because the father is a twit the mother must be the same. This is not always the case. My husband is a darling but very computer minded. He never sees the danger that a certain action may cause. I watch my girls like a hawk and everyone tells me I have to learn to trust him. HA! I love him but I know his limitations (like I actually had to tell him that my 5 year old who does not swim CANNOT waterski!). If the mother put too much trust in just the fact that this was the child's daddy, it would not be the first time a woman made this mistake.

It is a shame that there are some who abuse the system. The father apparently has something to do with the baby's disappearance.
Here is an alert in my state.

Sophia Juarez 5 years old.

You are so right.....when my 4 children were small, they'd wait till I went somewhere, and then ask dad if they could do something they knew I wouldn't let them do.....

Mine too! My five year old thought it was a good idea if Daddy spun her in circles, holding her by the ankles in my family room. HE DID IT! I screeched! I asked if my darling husband had ever heard of closed head injuries? Slamming a girls head into a wall when he miscalulated the distance is not a good thing. Like I said, he is a great daddy but an absent minded parent.
