Benjamin Curtis, the 22-year old actor who portrays the Dell Guy in those bothersome computer commercials, was arrested late last night (2/9) on a marijuana possession charge, The Smoking Gun has learned. According to cops, Curtis was holding a "small bag of marijuana" when he was popped on Manhattan's Lower East Side (at Ludlow and Rivington for you Gothamites). Curtis is currently being held in Central Booking and is scheduled to be arraigned later today in Manhattan Criminal Court. Curtis, who lives in lower Manhattan, was charged with criminal possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. Bonnie Shumofsky, the actor's agent, said she was unaware of her client's bust when contacted this morning by TSG. (1 page)
Well, I think trying to get votes from Libertarians is a fool's cause. We are much better off and more successful trying to get votes from black Americans and Latinos.
I guess I will never understand the LP infatuation with drugs. Unlike skydiving drugs have long term effects. The abuser is not an island upon himself.
As for alcohol (which the LP's bring up like clockwork) - it has a cultural basis which no other drug can claim. It is a drink, a foodstuff, a preservative, a disinfectant, and even helps fuel your car. It is also used in Church services to commemorate Jesus at the Last Supper.
One of my brothers was a Catholic missionary who had to get special permission to bring wine into dry Southern counties (yes, we have dry counties and I respect the wishes of their voters) to have church services.
I have never seen drugs do good for anyone. I nearly wrecked my own life with them. And no, I do not have the attitude of "I couldn't handle it so keep it banned". I have simply seen too many people who have ruined their lives through naivete. People are so uniformed about drugs.
As it is, they remain illegal. I think we should respect the laws as they are. Maybe local communities someday will have legal drugs - I would not agree with them, but I would support their right to choose so.
Until that day happens, I suggest we respect our laws. I really don't think that is too hard of a thing to do.
If your chute doesn't open, that has long term effects.

So what?
I have never seen drugs do good for anyone.
I have never seen Cheetos do good for anyone---let's ban them!
Wrong---you need to associate with a better class of people.
If there were a drug which cured cancer I would want it to be available. Asking if I would want to be available like you want pot to be available, the answer is no.
The LP guys always bring it down to dope.
Not really. Just lower my federal tax rate from 33% to 15% and lower federal budgetary spending by about 50% and you'll have my vote. Those are the two biggies for me.

That's a pity. You don't understand freedom then. Too bad since you're on FR.com. From my point of view, it all stems from me having the freedom to put into my body whatever I wish (again, broken record statement; I personally do not and never have done illicit drugs) and not have the government dictate that. It boils down to who owns the body, myself (with God) or the government? The line is crossed when someone uses drugs and then commits a crime. The best comparison would be a drunken driver killing a mother in her minivan with 3 kids. Being drunk isn't illegal, but driving drunk and killing people certainly is.
Marijuana (and the coca plant [cocaine]) have a cultural basis as well from old Native America. I guess we Euro-Centric people just aren't cultured enough to know how to handle it, eh? It probably has something to do with us being so Euro-Centric. The hemp plant also has numerous industrial and nutritious purposes as well. I don't know exact facts, aside from its use as ropes or paper (won't kill anymore trees!) and the seeds have a very high protein content.
I have never seen drugs do good for anyone.
Sorta like alcohol and cigarettes, isn't it?
Until that day happens, I suggest we respect our laws. I really don't think that is too hard of a thing to do.
I agree and I do, I'd just like to see it changed, but the control zealots of the country wish not to allow people individual freedoms.
Nice job of implying everything is relative. Since I can buy a gun, I guess that implies a MrLeRoy intrinsic right of owning atomics.
Please try a jab at keeping things in PERSPECTIVE.
As for your "so what" comment - it shows that you have no idea why alcohol is legal and other drugs are not. Since you are so focused on it, why not try to get it banned?
The next time someone shoots up a house under the influence of Cheetos, ping me. It's all relative, don't cha know.
Again, nice work at a classic example of relevatism.
FINALLY! Now why did that have to be like pulling teeth?
Dude! I'm unemployed!
Fire it up!
Nice job of implying everything is relative.
No, just a nice job of shooting down one of your arguments.
As for your "so what" comment - it shows that you have no idea why alcohol is legal and other drugs are not.
"Cultural basis" may be the excuse, but it's not a rational reason.
People speak of abortion in terms of freedom as well.
By the way, thanks for saying it is too bad I am here. This is a conservative forum, not a LP one.
The fact is that it is because of freedom that drugs are illegal. If the majority of the voters wanted to legalize drugs, it would happen. But I do recall a few ballot initiatives carshing and burning recently.
