Serious(vanity)

Posted on 02/07/2003 10:54:10 AM PST by Intimidator

Ok, call me nitpicky but whats the deal with freepers misspelling the word serious by spelling it series? Also the word HUGE is not spelled hugh. This is driving me absolutely CRAZY. Ok my rant is over, thanks for reading.

I'm beginning to think the average age on here now is somewhere close to 13 or 14.

Well, boy, do I feel sheepish...

Glad somebody is mature on here. I'm beginning to think the average age on here now is somewhere close to 13 or 14.

Oh, please...

What you're obviously missing -- even though the post to which you are responded tried to explain it to you -- is that the things which grate on your nerves are "running gags" here, with a long history. People *know* they're silly, and *know* that the misspellings et al grate, which is part of the whole *point*.

Read the link to the original "series" thread (posted somewhere on page 1) and you should start to understand. Someone erroneously kept misspelling "serious" as "series", despite the fact that people started teasing them for it and giggling about it. The fact that the person didn't grasp the snickering was part of what made it so hilarious. And thus a new running gag, an "inside joke" was born.

The same is true of a lot of the other gags on this thread, including "moose", "cheese", "showers", and so on. They have a long history here as allusions to earlier infamous threads which went hilariously askew in various ways.

It's shared Freeper nostalgia: "hey, remember that thread when..."

One doesn't have to be "13 or 14" to enjoy running gags. In fact, much of the use of them is very intricate and subtle, ringing the changes in novel and clever ways, challenging the reader to try to keep up. There are a lot of sophisticated wordplay and crafty references involved.

Additionally, the more mature one is here, the more one needs an outlet for comic relief to help deal with all the very serious world problems we're faced with daily.

I'm a real stickler for proper spelling myself (note to Freepers: "missile" is spelled with two i's), but I can still tell the difference between a lazy or ignorant misspelling and a winking joke. So lighten up.

"Don't worry about it, it isn't series. :oP"

I think I missed the point of this thread.

Is it: "Hugh's sister got a series møøse bite while he was in the shower?"

If so I think we should shoot it with a missle.
