I don't know how the United Nations felt about Colin Powell's "J'accuse" speech against Saddam Hussein. I can only say that he persuaded me, and I was as tough as France to convince.
{Snip}
I wasn't so sure about the al Qaeda connection. But I had heard enough to know that Saddam Hussein, with his stockpiles of nerve gas and death-dealing chemicals, is more of a menace than I had thought. I'm not ready for war yet. But Colin Powell has convinced me that it might be the only way to stop a fiend, and that if we do go, there is reason.

Surprised this isn't posted yet... or, at least, I didn't see it.
McGrory isn't fully on-board and there are still a few vomitrocious comments. But if this leftist Bush-hater is saying this much in favor of the President's policy on Iraq, that's saying a lot for Powell's success yesterday.

I am no fan of war, and would love to find some other solution that didn't involve killing Iraqi subjects and American citizens. I'm no fan of Bush, either. But if it's a choice of believing him vs. believing Saddam Hussein, it's not hard to choose.

Baby steps, Mary, baby steps. Think too hard and the liberal mucous that's been clogging your head all these years might run out all at once and deflate your skull.

I love that when one is a syndicated columnist, one can try to foist pieces about one's own thought processes on the unsuspecting public.

Isn't Mary LONG past retirement age? The picture that accompanies her columns in the paper must be 15 years old, and she looked 70 back then.

It says a good deal about McGrory that she could be convinced, because the vast majority of the "peace" crowd are absolutely not listening.

Martin Sheen says the same thing but I think he means it in a different way.

I don't know about the
vast< majority. I've been looking over on Democratic Underground (forgive me). There are some meltdowns going on over there, as a perhaps small, but significant, number of DUers are saying they are convinced by Powell.
So I'd say a fair deal of the "peace" crowd is listening -- and some are actually paying attention.

One good thing about writing... There is no retirement age... Another reason that I want to be a writer.

They say that 'a man is known by his enemies.'
I have always counted the Washington Post and Mary McGrory as my enemies.
But now that they back the use of force against Iraq, I am beginning to doubt myself.
What ever happened to the good ol' days when libs were more predictable?

Thanks for posting this.
In this column, the author kept straying into the soggy marshes of Democratic invective, but she came out on the high road. On this issue, anyway.

It says a good deal about McGrory that she could be convinced, because the vast majority of the "peace" crowd are absolutely not listening. Congressman Matsui says he still need more proof. Like maybe 10,000 deaths from anthrax or smallpox will convince him? He doesn't worry. Probably thinks it will only happen on the east coast.

There's a difference between enemies and opponents.
Your opponents are those you disagree with, however vehemently. But, when the chips are down, you're there for each other. Your enemies are those who, when the chips are down, look to see if you're among them, so they can get a kick in. It's something I have to, too often, remind myself.
The next month or two should separate our opponents from our enemies, both domestically and internationally.
