All too often, the smaller breeds of dogs are yappy little pains in the butt. However, this breed is typically gentle mannered, playful and friendly. I feel sorry for the poor little guy.

Cats shouldn't be out wandering loose. They eat birds and other local fauna, and dang sure aren't welcome in my yard. If they're out loose and uncontrolled, they deserve to wind up in a trap.

"I didnt realize they had coyotes in Conn. Are they there because some animal-rights Nazis wanted wild animals near urban centers and farms/ranches? "

Some parts of Cincinnati are experiencing an Coyote infestation problem also, coyotes preying on pets just like poor, bleeding heart, Kathie.

We also have a way out of control problem with white tail deer, racoons, crows, you name it -- none of the liberals want to kill anything because....that's so crewelllll.

I didn't see your post before my previous one; it sounds like you and I are reading off the same page in the hymnal.

"How many dogs die in the US every day? Why do they not make the national news? Why is this one different from them? Who are the freaks that really want to know this sort of news story? Who are the lousy reporters that think this is worth putting on the newswire?"

Well obviously, the coyote was black and from the 'hood. The dog was white and lived a life of luxury. It's all justified. In fact, the dog no doubt provoked the situation and is really at fault here, not the coyote. We should just give the coyote a scholarship to some nice Urban dog pound where it will become a very civilized pet.

This is so sad. People are attracted to cute puppies, so breeders breed dogs that retain their cute little puppy-like looks throughout adulthood. This produces a rather useless dog. But why should looking like a helpless, cute puppy be restricted to a small animal unable to defend itself? If only I could breed that neotenous little visage onto one of my hellhounds, I'd make a million bucks! BUWHAHAHAhahahaha . . . Off to the lab . . .

A coyote was stalking my little Jack Russel back in the summer while I was pasture mowing about a quarter mile away. I mowed up to the house and retrieved my Police Sniper .308 Model 700 and introduced him to a one shot policy. I have nailed several coyotes since and still have two cats and the Jack Russel.

I thought it would take longer for somebody to turn this into a race thread for no apparent reason.

I had a Bichon for 10 wonderful years. My darling Sophie died on last election evening. She was at the vets, hospitalized for several related, serious ailments. She was the best dog I ever had, my best pal for a decade.

We really understood each other; in a way, she was my canine identical twin, and I loved her to pieces. Bichons are the greatest. I still cry when I get to thinking about her and how much I miss her. I wish we could have had a couple more years together.

Buy a shotgun and your coyote problems will go away!

We shoot racoons in the butt with a pellet gun to protect our kitties and their food, but are reluctant to actually kill one because it would be such a mess to bury. And if you want to eat them, don't you have to soak them in milk to sweeten the meat?

LOL! Thanks for sharing. That is one of the funniest pieces of writing I have ever read.

Sure wish there was a complete collection of the Road Runner cartoons available on tape or DVD. I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

When you mentioned it, I remembered having read it and did a quick search. It's priceless, all right.

Trapping of any kind shouldn't be taken lightly -- it's almost impossible to avoid trapping unintended targets.

Years ago we got some cage traps from animal control to hopefully eliminate the coons and possums that infest our neighborhood. We never caught one, but we observed daily our cats and other cats going in and cat burglaring the bait without releasing the trap. I think it was the neighborhood feline entertainment for about ten days.

I wrote a story for a local rag in the '90s about coyotes, bobcats, and possums in Southern California. Usually, people think that any increase in these creatures in urban areas is because they're being "pushed out" of their habitat. Savvy Fish n Game and Animal Control folks told me that coyotes and bobcats, in particular, are VERY adaptable, stealthy, (bobcats are masters of super-stealth) and intelligent. They like cities and urban areas because there's always something to eat and someplace to hide. I was told that coyotes are great for ivy-heavy places because they eat rats, and possums (nasty looking critters!) are good for gardens because they keep the bugs down.

Trust me. You really don't want to tangle with or even get up close to a cornered adult raccoon. You better have some good firepower or leave it a wide escape route.

If the coyotes live near cities or suburbs, then we should shoot the coyotes with dart guns and take them to a rural area. Where I live they kill cats all the time. My parents live right in the center of Phoenix metro area and the coyotes come from a federal park right nearby and kill cats every night. It is sick. Stupid liberals prefer it that way. About 20 years ago in LA a coyote came into a back yard and took an infant from it while the parents watched. But fortunately that kid survived as coyote dropped it when dad ran after yelling. But there have been children killed by coyotes. What does it matter? In Idaho they release grizzly bears into the woods knowing full well that people have houses in the woods. In many states they've released wolves or mountain lions. In California two women were eaten by mountain lions released by our federal guv friends. I myself have lost two cats to coyotes.
