Cats shouldn't be out wandering loose. They eat birds and other local fauna, and dang sure aren't welcome in my yard. If they're out loose and uncontrolled, they deserve to wind up in a trap.

I disagree, but legally speaking it depends on the local laws. Cats are legally allowed to run free where I live.

And as for killing birds, they mostly kill birds that are already sick or aren't the sharpest tools in the shed to begin with. If it weren't for cats, the bird population would quickly devolve into a bunch of half-blind, slow-reflexed housepets. I feed birds by scattering seed in my driveway everyday. I've got two cats (three until recently) and find around 2 dead birds per year in my yard (versus several dozen who feed there daily). Larger birds gobble up a lot more songbirds than cats do.

Other "fauna" killed by cats is pretty much limited to mice, rats, and the occasional squirrel. Many people regard all of these as pests, and resort to human methods of trying to wipe them out.
