Feb. 1, 2003 - The University of Central Florida has announced that the Sally Ride Science Festival will continue as planned from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

While the events of today have cast a deep sense of sorrow among all of us, Engineering Dean Marty Wanielista and Sally Ride have decided after careful consideration to continue this weekend's festival.

"I believe the science and engineering community will join us in honoring these heroes by continuing our efforts to promote science, math and engineering to aspiring young women," Wanielista said. "This is an extremely difficult time for Sally Ride and her team and I appreciate her decision to stay and participate in this important program."

"This is a tragic day for the space program for the nation," Sally Ride said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the Columbia astronauts. These brave men and women dedicated themselves to exploring and expanding our frontiers of knowledge. We will never forget them or their contributions."

FYI Florida FReepers

This was to be a fantastic program for middle school girls to encourage an interest in science. The festival will press on but, wow, that will be tough.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, keep this program in mind for your children when it comes to a location near you.
