Laura in a war of words

WASHINGTON - There will be no anti-war protests inside the White House.

That's the edict from First Lady Laura Bush, who has canceled a poetry festival scheduled there for Feb. 12, fearing it was going to turn into a massive anti-war rally in the Bush living room.

"While Mrs. Bush respects the right of all Americans to express their opinions, she, too, has opinions and believes it would be inappropriate to turn a literary event into a political forum," said Noelia Rodriguez, spokeswoman for the First Lady.

The symposium was to celebrate the work of poets Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman. But participants were quietly preparing to read anti-war poems.

Marilyn Nelson, Connecticut's poet laureate, said she was even planning to wear a silk scarf emblazoned with peace signs.

It would have been so messy if Laura had to shoot them dead in the White House Living Quarters. Some people just need killing.

What the heck is it with these "state" poet laureates. I've never heard of them before this crazy one from NJ started spouting off his anti-American rhetoric.

Why do we need "official" poet writers? Does every state have them and are our tax dollars going to pay them? If so it should be the first thing they should cut out of the budgets even though it's probably an insignificant amount. Every little bit helps.

Maybe they thought the invitation said, Polemic Festival. Kudos to Mrs. Bush for keeping the riffraff out of our house!

Quietly preparing, but loudly reading?
Apparently they were one administration too late. Laura doesn't want to spend the taxpayers' money cleaning up after this riffraff.

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Hitler is dead,
Saddam should be, too.

My wife is a Poet Laureate nominee here in VT. Laura could invite her and I guarandamntee she wouldn't be reading any anti-war poems.

That was beautiful. (sniff)

Mrs. Bush has more backbone and a greater sense of decency than all of Congress put together.

Good for you Mrs. Bush. Why let the likes of these subliminals stink up the place. As for you Marilyn Nelson, I have two letters of the alphabet for you. U and F. If you know how to alphabetize characters in the proper order, I'm sure you'll get my message.

Good question!

Hey Rob, we don't have one of those, do we?

Wait a minute - it appears we do, or did:

http://www.sos.state.ga.us/state_capitol/education_corner/state_poet_laureate.htm

"He will hold the title of Georgia Poet Laureate for the length of Governor Barnes' term in office."

Well, at least that's over. And, on first impression, this guy looks OK, as "poet laureates" go. Anyone that has a book with a politically incorrect title involving firearms and killing small animals, can't be all bad.
