Well, I seached the palace over
And I thought I found nerve gas

I doubt any of them are worthy of the title historian. Historical revisionists, yes. Historians, no.

The real question to ask is, how many have any special knowledge of war and peace? For example, the one from the University of Delaware is specialized in studies of gender (Victorian era).

At least one is "opposing" it from the grave.

Well, Democrats vote from the grave, so why not Dem. historians opposing the war from the grave.

As one with a bachelors degree in classical history, I must agree with you, in principle. War is often necessary, and in the fullness of human history has been one of the single most important and beneficial driving forces behind cultural and technological development. Whether THIS war is necessary... that's a separate issue. I, for one, think it is indeed so.

and, to my relief, not one of the historians under whom I have had the privilege of studying have signed this odious piece of flummery.

Wrong....a fair number of the historians who signed are libertarians and conservatives who, unlike the inconsistent freepers, opposed Clinton's Kosovo War and now oppose Bush's looming Iraq War.

Yeah right a fair number of conservatives on colleges campi
Ain't no such animals on the college campi

My specialty is American business and economic history, and you can see my stuff for yourself in my most recent book, "The Entrepreneurial Adventure" (Harcourt, 2000) or my new reference book just out from Wiley, "The American West." (W is in there!)

In my department, and of those historians I know, not ONE objected to ANYTHING Clinton did. (I except the one person who now supports the Iraq bitch-slapping---but he didn't approve of Clinton, either!).

In fact, aside from him, I can't think of ONE historian currently teaching who has supported ANY American war of the 20th century.

I am afraid that by the time they form committees and subcommittees, the war will be over. They will not even have time to pass out the pot.

"HAW"? The only appropriate response seems to be, "HAW HAW HAW!"

Indeed, these cretins are the moral heirs of old "Lord Haw Haw" of World War II infamy. Of course, it is a given that the American Historical Association is completely infested with left-wing socialist types, and has been for years.

Thank you for putting up that link. I went there, read the list, read the statement, then read another 20 pages of that "radical" website. Out of it came my next UPI column entitled, "Historians against History (HAH!)"

I would probably not have known about this collection of ignoramuses and their smary statement except for this thread. And I wouldn't have gotten all the ancilary information necessary to write a good and original column for UPI, without following the link you provided.

Thank you. And thanks to FReepers generally.

Congressman Billybob

Click for latest column for UPI, "Necessary Lies -- Iraq & N. Korea" (Now up on UPI wire, and FR.)
