Democrats demand ‘proof’ from Bush

Daschle, Pelosi sharply assail president on eve of State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 — On the eve of President Bush’s State of the Union address, congressional Democratic leaders challenged the president to show “proof to the world” that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.

Jan. 26 — Presidential aides indicate that Bush’s State of the Union address will deal with a growing federal deficit and will require cuts to some programs. NBC’s Joe Johns reports.

IN WHAT WAS billed as a “pre-buttal” to Bush’s address to Congress and the nation Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the party’s leader in the House, sharply criticized Bush for taking what they said was a “hurry-up approach on Iraq” and charged that he was creating a “credibility gap” by saying one thing and doing another across a range of issues.

“If we have proof of nuclear and biological weapons, why don’t we show that proof to the world — as President Kennedy did 40 years ago when he sent Adlai Stevenson to the United Nations to show the world U.S. photographs of offensive missiles in Cuba,” Daschle said at the National Press Club news conference.

“At a time when we have only just begun to fight the war on terror, the American people deserve to hear why we should put hundreds of thousands of American troops at risk, spend perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars, risk our alliances, and inflame our adversaries to attack Iraq,” said Daschle, D-S.D.

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS CITED

Daschle’s reference to Cuba related to the Cuban missile crisis of four decades ago. At the time, the Kennedy administration unveiled reconnaissance photographs at the United Nations to prove its claim that the Soviet Union had dispatched missiles to an island 90 miles off the United States mainland.

“The state of our union today is anxious,” he said. “The triple threat of war, terrorism and recession are combining to make Americans unsure about their future and unclear about the course our nation is taking.

Pelosi’s criticism of Bush was directed largely at domestic issues, including the president’s proposed elimination of the tax on corporate dividends and his record on the environment.

Pelosi isn't worth the internet time to email her.

I wouldn't waste the cyberspace, either. Pelosi is stuck in the 60's and probably only responds to letters sent via Airmail...

Do you remember where/when you read this?

I have a terrible memory, but I think that it was on the History Channel show that aired last week. The title was something like "Saddam's Weapons."

You are so right. I am sick to death of watching the libral media give Daschle and that Pelosi air time to spew their hate of America and this President!
God I wish we could send them to Iraq where their hate filled lies would fall right in with Sadam Hussain!
Keep up the good work of informing America of their Hypocracy.

You meant to say "Chicago", not "Grand Funk RR".

That was an extremely sobering television show, even for someone like me, who believes that Hussein has WMD and will use them if we don't stop him. Every leftist should be tied down and forced to watch it, although I doubt that it would open many of their eyes.

>>After tomorrow night, they will be totally irrelevant.<<

One day the Dims will awake to realize W has outsmarted them all along the way.

I want to agree with both of you. But..I'm hearing all over the news radio that Bush will agree to extended inspections. The only thing he asks is that the extension include a deadline.

There's also talk of new UN resolutions being proposed by the Brits.

I'm very confused and fear Mr. Bush has gone "wobbly".

They made that lame argument already. Sen Boxer said that the Democrats made demands that Bush go to the UN and that Bush finally did 'even though I think he really didnt wat to' ... this is such a stinky lie, especailly given taht the criticism came *after* Bush went to the UN and made the case there for UN to not be irrelevent by acting, then we got the Congress to act.

Tractorman, your wordplay;

Tommy Daschle = WMD (weasle of mass distortion)

is a HIT! Just gander at how many Freepers are ROFLT(their)A'sO!

registered-this is worthy of your talents!

It is so perfect-it applys to the entire elite circle of leftist mucks now parading around our news media crying 'proof, proof, we want PROOF!

This entire thread just makes me realize, over and over, how blessed we are to have President Bush sitting as our leader during this crisis. I shudder to think what our world would look like right now if any of these wobbly, indecisive, cowardly, anti-freedom, sickeningly dependent of worldview democrats were sitting as our president. God seems to have known (no surprise there) what type of individual we needed to take us through these harrowing times.

I love our Father. Don't forget to pray tonight for President and his team, our nation, for those who distort the truth to be deeply confounded and for our military and fellow FReepers!
