There have been numerous restaurants such as you discribe in Delaware for many years. and I have enjoyed my meals at them over the years.
But the difference is that the owners chose to make that particular move, others chose not to do so. Now no one has the choice.
The only ads from other states of which I am aware are radio ads, primarily in the big markets of Baltimore and Philadelphia.
I won't even listen to my local radio stations (the ones where I used to work) anymore because of the obnoxious ad campaigns from the State promoting their snitch lines.
Very, Very True.
Del has always been a major destination for people, esp. young singles, from cities like Washington.
Yes, Rehoboth Beach has a nickname of the "nation's summer capitol" because of the amount of folks that either have second homes or rent places for the summer from the D.C. area.
It's a great week-end getaway. Or maybe I should say was.
You have that right. there has already been one major casaulty (?) because the owner saw the writing on the wall even before the ban went into effect. The Renegade, while commonly known as a gay bar, was always a hot spot for regular folks because it was the greatest, if not only, true dance club in the entire state.
By the time the summer tourists start getting here it will be long gone and in its place construction of a shopping center or housing development will have begun.
We should know by July 4th if smoking bans are a good idea.
You're right this summer will be interesting, but we need not wait until July 4th to know that this stupid ban was anything but a good idea.
When places in Dover that are normally packed through the holiday season are showing drops of more than $1,200 a week over last year and have available tables on new Year's eve - you know it's not working.
Not anymore. These laws are written by the national anti-smoker organizations and provided (for a "small" fee) to local anti groups seeking prohibitions. They've been through Kookiefornia and other places and know how to close the loopholes. VE HAFF VAYS OF MAKING YOU OBEY OUR MANDATES!
There is one place that is doing just that - and is now in jeopardy of losing it's liquor license.
A public Hearing is scheduled for this coming thursday night regarding definition of such things as "private clubs" in relation to the ban. Of course we all know that their decisions have already been made and this is just a formality.
they pulled the same stunt before it went into effect regarding compelling reasons for exemptions - all exemption requests to date have been denied. Including those of nursing homes that had built seperate buildings just for smokers. Those buildings are now non-smoking.
BWAAAAHAAAAHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
....qam1 lives in a county that was 99% for DAVIS!!!!!!!!
Wrong Tense.
It should be this bill Has backfired on Delaware, BIG TIME and will continue to do so
Sorry Wrong guy. I live in a county that went 57% for Lazio.
We did however at one time go 99% for Gerald "My wife needs an Uzi while I am in Washington" Soloman.
The only loophole I possibly see is the law does exempt places being utilized fo private purposes where the management has no control of the seating.
So I am wondering if I could go into any bar and rent it for the night for say $1 and of course I would have to take control of the seating so I would get to decide who comes in which of course I would let anyone in who didn't care about the smoking.
It's wild too, as I read on a recent post here in FR, that the real Nazis, for the purity of the "master race" no doubt, were ardently anti-smoking. Hitler was a vegetarian too...
Fascinating how catch phrases like "anti-smoking-nazis" ring true.
Oh yeah, While the term "Nazi" is overused, It fits when describing the anti-smoking Nazis and the other health Nazis. Just look at that 800 number that is constantly promoted to report your fellow citizens to the smoke gestapo. It's on billboards on interstate highways through the state for god's sake. How can anybody not see the paraells between what's happening in Delaware compared to what happened in Nazi Germany.
An interesting historical note is that out of everything the only thing the German people defied Hilter on was in fact his distaste for Cigarettes. Throw people in ovens -- Hey no problem but give up their cigarettes no %#@! way. So if Hilter was unsucessful with the sheep of Nazi Germany I am sure the current gaggle of antismoking Nazis will also fail with the freedom loving people of America.
By the way, our police no longer respond to fender benders or break and enter, unless violence is involved, but they do have the man power to spy on ashtrays.
You are right, of course. It's usually much earlier that people rent their summer houses. I wouldn't be surprised to see the value of real estate in Rhehoboth take a large dip soon. Both rental prices and investment value.
Awwww, thanks for worrying about my life for me.
What I find so interesting is the amount of smoking I saw in the waiting room where I sat with my friend waiting to have radiation therapy. She was 36, smoked 2 packs a day. Continued to smoke. Sad.
I don't bother putting it into a tag line:
Anti-smoker, anti-business busybodies REEK of things far worse than any smoker.
You must live in a far more realistic place than Delaware.
Not only has smoking been outlawed in medical facilities for more than 10 years, now even in the seperate buildings erected specifically for smokers in long term care facilities smoking has been banned.
Because it is an enclosed "public" place the state deemed there was no compelling reason to grant these facilities an exemption to the smoking ban.
If I had a friend or relative in a long term care facility in Delaware, I guarantee they would have been moved to one in another state by now.
Even the people's Republic of Maryland doesn't treat people the way Delaware does.
This smoking ban in Delaware has nothing to do with anything but CONTROL. And the people in charge of the enforcement of it have all but said it.
