- Before exceptional charges, McDonald's made a net profit of 25 cents a share.
- The fourth-quarter results underlined the task faced by Jim Cantalupo, who took over from Jack Greenberg as chief executive at the start of the year
This is called "taking a bath." This is a new CEO clearing the books of all of the bad news that's been accumulating in the corners like dustbunnies. This way you can 'blame the dead' for all the red ink, plus make it as easy as possible to show profits in the future by expensing all possible bad news right now. Got a questionable debt that's been written down to 50% of face value? Eat it now... all of it. Got some real estate on the books at purchase price that's really not worth that much? Write it down... now. 23 restaurants in a soon-to-be war zone? Write them off. If they don't get blown up after all, you can act surprised and put them back... showing a profit. Not that McDonald's doesn't have problems, but this loss is not a big deal. It's housecleaning. |

Anyone on this thread care to mention a fast food chain that sells real food with real taste?

It's rather simple, I don't know why they haven't figured it out. First, the food is worse now than it ever was. Second, Boomers are aging and looking at healthier diets, Third, the portions are too big and my appetite isn't what it used to, and Fourth, most folks are cracking down on what their kids eat and are cutting back on fast food when they can.

Something is wrong with most McDonalds. I go thru the drive-thru the other evening, order a Quarter-Pounder with bacon and a regular fry. After being asked to pull forward, I finally get my food about 10 minutes after ordering it.
Now, seeing as how they don't cook the burgers in the stores anymore (near as I can tell, probably why they aren't as good as they used to be), the bacon is surely pre-prepared, and they should always have reasonably fresh and hot fries ready to go, what was I waiting for?
And inside the store, what the heck are they doing? Most McD's now seem to have cashiers that take one order at a time, filling it before they take the next. At one time they used to have order fillers, leaving the cashiers to take several orders in a row.
I still stop in occasionally as it's very convenient to my home, but it's not what it used to be.
