MONACO Jan. 22 An American male nurse convicted in the arson death of billionaire banker Edmond Safra escaped from prison overnight, police said Wednesday.
Ted Maher, originally of Auburn, Maine, was convicted of arson in a 1999 fire in Monaco that also killed one of Safra's other nurses, Vivian Torrente.

DNA, huh? So what, did Maher have sex with the two of them?
This just adds to my notion that this "DNA thing" has been way overblown by the media.

The above came to light when I was doing a search for "Monte Carlo Finance" to find some articles on simulation of mortgage pools.

I'm sorry, I don't understand how a reckless act that is nevertheless not intended to cause injury can be called "felony murder." Perhaps you can enlighten me.

Death incidental to any felony, whether recklessly or maliciously committed, is viewed as felony murder in some jurisdictions.

DNA enters into this because the dead did not die of smoke inhalation.DNA has nothing to do with determining whether or not someone died of smoke inhalation.

Uh, I realize that....If they DID NOT die from smoke inhalation, there was another cause....which DNA does have something to do with.

make that "if" there was another cause. I have not read everything on the story so I am not sure that claim is even true. I think the cause was "asphixiation"....

In some states in the US, if you commit certain felonies, and arson is a great example, and in the execution of that felony, if someone is killed then you can be charged with felony murder. Felony murder usually carries the same punishment as first or second degree
murder. Forget manslaughter.
It doesn't matter if you intend for someone to die, or even for instance in arson, if you knew anyone was in the building. Another example is armed robbery. If three thugs rob a store and one of them shoots and kills someone in the store, they can ALL be charged with first degree murder.
Accidental death or lack of intent are not defenses. So, I hate to say it, but I agree with the ten years Ted Maher got.
I did a quick online search, and here is one case in Rhode Island from 2000 that talks a lot about the doctrine. http://www.geocities.com/wrongfulconvictions/diaz/felonyMurder.htm

(Court TV) Heidi Maher picked up the ringing telephone in her upstate New York home at about 9 p.m. Tuesday and heard the familiar voice of Ted Maher, the husband she thought was quietly serving his 10-year sentence for two deaths in the French principality of Monaco.
Ted Maher, however, wasn't calling from Monaco.
He was at a hotel in Nice, France, and in need of money to further finance the daring escape he and his cellmate made Tuesday night from a castle-like prison overlooking the Mediterranean.
"I told him no. I'm not going to aid and abet you," Heidi Maher said Wednesday, still numb from the call she says ended when her husband slammed the telephone down angrily.
To: Illbay
No problem. It's good to know huh? Kind of makes sense of why Mr. Maher got what he got. It was unfortunate all the way around.

Actually, I didn't have any qualms with his sentence. Human life is precious. If you are responsible for the taking of life--even if not intentional--by your own careless actions, you ought to pay the price.

Wow. What's going on there? I thought Heidi--assuming that really was her posting to these threads--was convinced he has been railroaded!
How can you "aid and abet" (in the pejorative sense) someone who is escaping INjustice?

Secondly, Yes he did confess BUT, it was coerced by the
Monaco gestapo which threatened him with not seeing his family again. This was pointed out time and time again but apparently, some people are too stubborn to accept it. They are choosing to take the word of the Monaco gestapo over some freepers who have done their homework and researched this story. I have been on most of these threads and read all of your "research". Your research is nothing but the word of Maher's wife, and other various speculations. I have not seen one shred of proof that Monaco has railroaded Maher or that they forced him to confess, etc.
It is a typical tactic of people peddling BS to direct people to long-winded articles that refer to other long-winded articles that refer back to the original long-winded article, and then say "Well, I am not going to debate you because you have obviously not read all the research."
I have followed this since it started. Just like the Christines (another FR celebrity nutjub) the guy is guilty and all of your so called research is entirely conjecture and circular argument.
The best was when you guys kept saying that he was not allowed near the press, meanwhile there were picture all over the internet of close ups of him taken by press photographers.
He did it. Deal with it.

And with those kinds of people, EGC, it's best to do as you are doing and what Neal Boortz did on Phil Donahue's program the other night when he was disparaged: withdraw Yeah, especially when you refuse to provide a single shred of evidence of your claims. I know, I know, we should spend hours reading through your posts from three years ago....LOL... The surest sign that someone on FR is peddling BS is when they will spend 4 hours arguing about why they won't simply post info that would only take them 5 minutes to post.

FYI, Rodney I did provide a link to the Ted Maher thread. Obviously you have chose not to look at it or even bother to look at all the other links that have been provided.I'm not going to waste anymore time messing with this. If you can't overcome your prejudices on this subject then that's your problem, not mine.

If you can't overcome your prejudices on this subject then that's your problem, not mine. YOU are the one drowning in prejudices. The facts are all over the place, but you resort to garbage put up by partisans for Maher.
Hell, Maher's own wife won't defend him any more. She appears to be as sick of his bullshit as the rest of us are.
