Meenie:
Me too, I went in in 1942 and only had competed the 8th grade. I went to the ninth, but flunked badly. All they wanted then was a warm body.(not really, they wanted people who wanted to fight) I served one hitch, got then got out. I am still a MARINE and will always be.
Good evening and the very best to you and yours.

Well, take comfort in knowing he is bright and is surrounded by [literally] the finest Military the Planet has ever seen. Not the British, not the Romans...nobody has done it better.
Gulf War I saw over 100,000 Iraqis killed and only 251 Americans. The Odds are "overwhelmingly" in your Son's favor. Soon he will be home with a chest full of ribbons and a cocky attitude that you'll fuss at him about...dont cry Mom....just confidently pray.

As of 1990 you need a high school diploma or something equivelant to it to join the usmc, when I joined a high school diploma was not required.

Um, if the dude waited until he graduated, the war in Iraq will be over. Or, at least, that's the thought that might be going through the peep's head..
This way he can get in before there aren't any folks left to kill...
To: VaBthang4
yeah....do you remember the old organization called "care"...when i was in 67-74 a package from home was called a "care" package and it really was.....mainly because the people that sent it really CARED about the person it was sent to.
To: cajun-jack
They still used the term in the early nineties.
Personal story: When I was at Parris Island my Aunt tried to smuggle Nestles Chocolate kisses to me in a box of inkpens...of course the attempt failed [miserably for me]...but she had the right idea.
Had those candies made it through...man I would've been in Heaven.

Do not misunderstand me. I am very proud of my son who wanted to do something for his country but I would have thought that his color blindness would have been an issue. Camoflage that will fool a normal-color-vision person often will stick out to a color-blind person like your son. This can be a big asset for an infantryman or a photo-recon analyst

Hang in there, Georgiabelle!
My husband's a Lt.Col in the USMCR. Every day, we are receiving emails from our friends who are being activated and shipped out. We have a friend on active duty over at CENTCOM who gets a kick telling everyone the Corps has issued him a one-way ticket, with an open return date. LOL! For us, it's pretty much "when," and not "if" anymore.
It's all how you choose to look at it. Our American force is ready, and will be the next generation of military history in the decades to come.
God bless you and your son. :)

I was an air controller, trained to operate 3 different radar systems, the AN-TPQ-10, the AN-TYA-3, and the AN-TPS-32. Trained to operate the AN-UYQ-3 radio van, the TSQ-122 communication shelter, drive and operate the MRC-87, TRC-75, PRC-25 and PRC-75, PRC-77 and PRC-47. Called in Air Strikes, MEDEVAC, Troop Resupply and Radar Guided bombing, also guided aircraft from takeoff to hand off to the FAC. Qualified for the CORPS with a 135 GCT score in 77. Dropped only 4 points in Boot Camp.
Had to go to school for all that. Funny, when I worked at Kaman Aerospace on SH-2's for the Navy, all I had to do was show up with a wrench and they showed me what to do.
Yeah, Calculus. I am an engineer now, and still dont need it for manufacturing or designing. Graduated with a 3.97 GPA.
Yeah. Marines are stupid. Right.
At least we dont dress like SkyCaps in the airport when in uniform.

I want to thank all of you for your support, your kind words and your prayers. I tried to sign up for Marine Moms but was having a bit of trouble. I will try again later.
I know that my son is ready for what ever comes, as I hope I am. And with Freepers like you I know that I will be able to face the coming year.

once your son gets to boot camp make sure and send a few letters addressed to, "[first name] 'push-ups' [last name". During mail call the DIs will just love that.

You're pretty ate up with ignorance and arrogance there girly boy. Pray you never need backup.

Times sure have changed. In "69" all you had to do was draw a breath and you qualified and I'm sure there were those who lied about that.

When I entered the Marines in 1981, a high school diploma was a requirement. I doubt they have relaxed those rules since then. Like RaceBannon, I trained for over a year and a half before I could even perform my MOS and I trained on much of the communication gear that he worked on. Except my GCT was a 143!
You chose to be an Airman and there is nothing wrong with that. Uncle Sam needs people in all branches of the armed services. Nobody needs to be ragging on the other branches of the service. Especially in times such as this.
To: RaceBannon
In 1964 you had to have had, to join the Marines, a HS diploma and no violations, other than traffic and that couldn't exced $50. When I enlisted in the Army the Marines were drafting, 1965, Judge Duggan in Peabody, Mass was the best recruiter the Marines ever had, WW2 vet.
To: Little Bill
Gee whiz. When I was down at Parris Island in the summer of '73 there were a bunch of guys from South Boston!

Massachusetts is the Heart of the Marine Corps for some reason.
