[history]
WASHINGTON - Gov. Gray Davis pressed Washington on Tuesday for federal money to plug California's record budget gap, saying the state and others are ``being shortchanged'' by shouldering increased costs for Medicaid and domestic security.
The governor, joined by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, also complained that eliminating the tax on stock dividends -- the centerpiece of President Bush's $674 billion economic-stimulus plan -- would drain $1 billion to $1.5 billion from California's coffers unless the state figures out a way to tax dividends separately.

If the SOB is lying about the size of the deficit, which the non partisan legislative analyst says he is, then how can he possibly know how much, if any, Federal aid is required to fill in the money pit he dug for himself?

They voted democrat, stop begging for others to underwrite their socialism.I will joyously tell the smarmy Leftists that dominate this area of California just that.
If any one liberal complains about anything in this state I'm gonna tell 'em get a hold of the law firm Ben, Dover and Smile...

From the article:
The governor, joined by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, also complained that eliminating the tax on stock dividends -- the centerpiece of President Bush's $674 billion economic-stimulus plan -- would drain $1 billion to $1.5 billion from California's coffers unless the state figures out a way to tax dividends separately.
Idea:
DRILL FOR OIL OFF THE COAST OF CALIFORNIA !!!

...then how can he possibly know how much, if any, Federal aid is required to fill in the money pit he dug for himself? He (Davis) could fill it with oil. Yes, oil.
Offshore oil drilling would fill that hole...

Just where is this Federal money going to magically appear from? Democrats! Just keep taking from the till. It somehow replenishes itself.

Dear Gray, No.
Yours truly,
The rest of the nation
You do realize that California exports enough in Federal taxes to wipe out that deficit?
Maybe "The rest of the nation" has been sucking a California teat for long enough?

Offshore oil drilling would fill that hole... And then some.
Not only that, but it would reduce the static pressure that induces seepage. Oil has been leaking from the seabed along the California for time immemorial. The Chumash indians used it to seal their boats. Cabrillo described the rocks on the coast as black with it.
Drilling for oil in this case would reduce the fouling of tidepools and beaches. It is the environmentally sound thing to do.

That's for sure. My position is that the deficit is not as bad as pictured. We are up 24% in tax receipts from four years ago. They just want more $$$$$. I say we pay our way and march on Sacramento.

Bush should consider it on this condition.... submit to a federal audit with prosecution powers and say they will publish the results in oct 2004

We have to get this idea out there if the Demo_Rats start pushing the story related on this thread.
The President needs to know about this, so he or someone else, can throw it in the hopper for the media.
If the Demo_Rats try to use California as an excuse to fight a Republican budget, we can say "California has plenty of oil to drill for that will do wonders for the economy in the state and for the country..."
To: NormsRevenge
"BUSH'S PLAN `FORGOT ABOUT THE STATES,' PELOSI SAYS"
How's this for a headline:
'California's lack of a plan hurts USA,' Energy Secretary says...
Story goes on to explain offshore drilling and benefit to California economy, energy and environment...

You do realize that California exports enough in Federal taxes to wipe out that deficit?I know that Californians pay more Federal tax than California receives in Federal spending in the state. On balance, that is probably true for most states, since the Feds spend money on building bases in Qatar, on embassies in Africa, etc.
Californians should demand more pork barrel spending in their state, I suppose.

The President needs to know about this, so he or someone else, can throw it in the hopper for the media. I doubt he would care. You need to learn more about how constraining supply to control who makes money is what the oil business is all about.

I would also add that the reason they get so much tax money out here is because those Bay Area liberals make so damn much money. Housing prices are high, and so are education levels. Silicon Valley technology companies and venture capital PRODUCE enough wealth to push the bulk of its residents into higher tax brackets. As a proportion of total income, we get hosed.
You know all that.

Yes, and I'm not sure what to do about it. Bush considered federal grants to the states to help out with their budget problems and rejected it. Rightly so, in my opinion, for a variety of reasons.
