Legislative Agenda
The Wall Street Journal says, 'Senate Repubican leaders are considering a filibuster proof budget maneuver to renew their push to allow drilling for oil in Alaska's Arctic Wildlife Refuge.'
United States Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico, the new Chair of the Senate Energy Committee, said he believes that the controversial Artice-refuge provision will be included as part of this years budget reconcilliation process.
The Committee, working in colloboration with the White House and the Senate Budget Committee, will put together a revenue raising package that could result in a floor vote as early as March or April.

That would set up the Republicans for some media drubbing on the ANWR issue. If it coincided with an ongoing Iraq war that some perceive as about oil (I don't, but some nincompoops do), the enviroleft might get some traction out of it.

I doubt anyone would raise a stink during a major military conflict.
Most people (except the extreme looney left) support the soldiers and the government during wartime.
Amazing the difference from 30 years ago, huh!

I hope they put in the budget bill and force the Democrats in the position of shutting down the government to keep us dependent on the Saudis. We'll be doing to them what they did to us back in 95' - and the public will decide they're the ones who are keeping the public from being served to make sure the Saudi sheiks rake in more oil profits. A beautiful picture of liberal consideration for America's welfare, not to mention keeping the government open for business.

I think they should pass it during the war. The media drubbing probably wouldn't happen due to all the war coverage.

"If it coincided with an ongoing Iraq war that some perceive as about oil (I don't, but some nincompoops do), the enviroleft might get some traction out of it."
On the contrary, it would show that the Iraq conflict is not about oil. Passing ANWR would reduce our dependence on Middle East oil... this would reduce, not increase, the pressure to proceed against Iraq.
Of course, that would be using logic against the enviroleft... would never work...

"...the public will decide they're the ones..."I think some of the public will. But the media will work overtime to convince everybody that it's all Bush's fault. ABC will show a clip of a family in rags, picking through garbage cans for scraps, as Jennings intones, "What you see here may soon be sweeping over America, and some are laying the blame squarely on George Bush."

THIS is what we've sent them to Washington to do!! Go GOP!!

Guys, we should probably consider this before alienating the left: The amount of gasoline ANWAR would produce could easily be saved by just a 0.4 mpg increase in efficiency for light cars. This length of efficiency stride was witnessed every 5 months during '79-80. It is estimated that putting all efficiency strategies available in 1989 to use could save 54 times the estimated amount of oil in ANWAR at one-sixth the cost. Amory and Hunter Lovins, July/August 2001. While the Bush administration and their oil allies refuse to breathe the word conservation, like two similar administrations in the 80s, many other pristine, protected wildernesses like that in Alaska are being added to the hit list for economic reasons. For the operation to be economical, experts predict the long-term price would need to be $18-$22 a barrel, yet the price of Alaskan oil stayed below $13 throughout the 90s. The aftermath of this short-term oil supply not available for 10 years is permanent damage to yet another ecologically unique landmark. Dont drill in ANWAR it is about greed and misinformation.
