Nice post.
The only thing I disagree with is making exceptions. If you're here illegally, you should be deported.
I don't care if you put down roots or not. Breaking the law should not be rewarded.

I love the essay, Luis! Your writing is getting so darn good, you'll be found in magazines before long, and then we'll be the little people you used to write for. LOL ... More power to you, my friend.
One note to add to the 'right on' essay: it is time to bring our employed military folks home to patrol the borders using their techno skills. Will it stop the ants from coming in? No, but it will slow them down, and it will get our people out of the nations we're paying to insult US, like South Korea, Germany, and ... oh never mind, no one listens to a non-political kook like me, anyway. You, on the other hand, they need to listen to, Luis!

Any individual caught in the U.S. illegally should be deported, and not allowed to return to this country, for any reason, for life. But I also think that if we find someone who has been here illegally for fifteen years, working, not breaking laws, setting roots, and otherwise being a model member of the community, we need to give them special consideration, and try thinking out of the box for a kinder solution. And what happens to the ones who aren't caught? If they work hard, don't break the law, and are model members of the community, in fifteen years from now they would also want people thinking out of the box for a kinder solution and special consideration. :-)

Thank you so much for your great essay! This makes a lot of sense to me:
Any individual caught in the U.S. illegally should be deported, and not allowed to return to this country, for any reason, for life. But I also think that if we find someone who has been here illegally for fifteen years, working, not breaking laws, setting roots, and otherwise being a model member of the community, we need to give them special consideration, and try thinking out of the box for a kinder solution.

Excellent article, as usual, Luis.
You present an interesting solution to the illegal immigration problem, one very well worth considering.
