President Bush is planning to side with white students against the University of Michigan in a landmark affirmative-action case before the Supreme Court this week, said a source close to White House deliberations.

Although White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Mr. Bush is still "listening to both sides of the case," another source said the president is unlikely to abandon his long-standing opposition to racial preferences at public universities.

I love it. After the 'Rats thought they had him cornered on the Lott/race issue - he turns right around on them and says "Wrong, buds - we're on to your little scam. And for quite some time."

Mr. Frist suggested that the Lott debacle should not discourage Republicans from wading into the affirmative-action debate.

But will the GOP cite "affirmative action" supporters as the ones who are racist in response to the predictable leftist propaganda?

I doubt it.

You don't call your opponents racists in a court brief. Oh, that would go over real well with the Scotus...lol

The brief will state that affirmative action quotas are unequal and discriminatory. It won't resort to name-calling.

That is our job, not the job of the legal folks.

I don't think of them as racist, they want an unfair advantage.

I hope that FReepers who are black would be insulted if they competed with me for something and were given extra points. The message is clear --- you are just not as good as the white guy. That is a racist and disgusting message from the "compassionate" left. Damn them for creating racial strife. Dubya has it right. Everyone gets an opportunity, and there own hard work and dedication is what will prevail.

...just a decent interval, before his administration states the quiescently obvious. He shouldn't be seen as stampeding to the USSC right after the Lott debacle - as if in answer to it.

President Bush is planning to side with white students

I guess the Washington Times has been studying at the feet of the NY Times.

If Bush actually has the gonads to do the right thing here, he will not be siding with the "white students", he will be siding with the color-blind goals of Martin Luther King Jr, who envisioned a nation that didn't judge people by their ethinic origins and didn't hand out spoils based on a citizen's skin color.

“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Rather than remain silent on the case, which the White House had been considering last week, the president is now expected to express his support for merit-based admissions in a brief that can be filed with the Supreme Court no later than Thursday.

Mr. Frist suggested that the Lott debacle should not discourage Republicans from wading into the affirmative-action debate.

"You know, we've been through a very difficult time in the last six weeks, difficult in the sense that issues have arisen unexpectedly," Mr. Frist said. "I'm glad they had arisen broadly." He added: "I think you're going to see a very positive dialogue on race, on racial issues, in all sorts of capacities that none of us would have predicted" recently.

I'm going to try my best to sum up what Rush said maybe a month ago on his show. Affirmative action and the liberals are racist towards minorities b/c it tells the minorities that they cannot achieve anything on their own...that that they need the dems and co. to accomplish anything. I would be insulted if I were told that the only way I can accomplish anything positive is by a government handout.

Even the LA Philharmonic uses a screen to mask an auditionee from all but what can be heard of one's musical abilities and senses. And guess what? They're a fairly balanced group.

Apparently, the wording is meant to indicate that since it was white students who brought the case, President Bush is siding with them.
