President Bush is planning to side with white students

I guess the Washington Times has been studying at the feet of the NY Times.

If Bush actually has the gonads to do the right thing here, he will not be siding with the "white students", he will be siding with the color-blind goals of Martin Luther King Jr, who envisioned a nation that didn't judge people by their ethinic origins and didn't hand out spoils based on a citizen's skin color.

“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Mr. Frist suggested that the Lott debacle should not discourage Republicans from wading into the affirmative-action debate.

"You know, we've been through a very difficult time in the last six weeks, difficult in the sense that issues have arisen unexpectedly," Mr. Frist said. "I'm glad they had arisen broadly." He added: "I think you're going to see a very positive dialogue on race, on racial issues, in all sorts of capacities that none of us would have predicted" recently.

Apparently, the wording is meant to indicate that since it was white students who brought the case, President Bush is siding with them.

"President Bush is planning to side with white students"

Amen. I also reject that characterization. It is about eliminating discrimination on the basis of skin color. Why should Colin Powell's or Harry Belafonte's children receive "extra points" for admission over a poor white kid from West Virginia. This advantage continues through graduate or law school and even to the workplace. Asians are left out of the equation (except to limit their numbers) because they are high-achievers. I hope Bush has the cajones to weigh in on this case and put his money where his mouth is. It is the principled thing to do regardless of the predictable outcry from the Democrats.
