Man linked to missing woman, girl kills self
01/11/2003
Authorities are unraveling the links among a suicide in a Grand Prairie motel this week, two missing people and a bloody trailer found in Central Texas.
The man who committed suicide, James D. Clinton, was wanted for questioning in the disappearances of his wife and her daughter.
Gay W. Clinton, 43, and her daughter, Samantha R. Clinton, 14, were reported missing Dec. 21 after relatives couldn't reach them.
At 8:40 a.m. Thursday, Mr. Clinton, 50, of Centerville in Leon County, called 911 from a room at the Comfort Inn in the 4000 block of South Great Southwest Parkway and said he was going to commit suicide.
"He said that they could use his body parts for science," said Detective John Brimmer, Grand Prairie police spokesman. "He said he had done something terrible."
Officers arrived at the motel minutes later and found Mr. Clinton dead from a gunshot wound to the head. A .357-caliber gun was found at the scene.
The Tarrant County medical examiner's office ruled his death a suicide, spokeswoman Linda Anderson said.
Mr. Clinton apparently wrote multiple suicide notes, but Detective Brimmer declined to detail their contents. The man also called relatives and told them of his intentions.
Some of the family members called the Leon County Sheriff's Department, which alerted agencies statewide that Mr. Clinton was suicidal and wanted for questioning, said Peggy Ivey, Leon County sheriff's spokeswoman.
Records show that Mr. Clinton and the missing woman and girl lived together in Centerville.
After Mr. Clinton committed suicide, Leon County investigators found a refrigerated truck-trailer in San Jacinto County, which is about 65 miles from Leon County. The trailer had been on Mr. Clinton's property in Centerville, police said.
"There was lots of blood found in the trailer," Ms. Ivey said. "We've collected forensic evidence. We have recovered no bodies; they are still considered missing."
