Scott Peterson could have said he was anywhere that day and come up with some receipt, etc. to attempt to prove his story.

She was 8 months pregnant .. why not call her family or friends or her OB Doctor or the hospital to see if she was there having the baby .. instead he called the police

He probably figured they'd believe his story about her missing and still be looking much closer to home ---trying to find tracks of the dog that would lead them to her.
