BANGOR, Maine (AP) Great Northern Paper Co., which employs 1,100 workers at mills in Millinocket and East Millinocket, filed for bankruptcy protection on Thursday.

The Chapter 11 filing was made late in the afternoon in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Bangor, according to a court clerk. Motions are scheduled to be heard Friday morning, the clerk said.

This happened the day after the coronation of the new governor Baldacci (RAT-Me) and our new congressman replacing Baldacci, Michaud (RAT-Me) used to work there. Northern Maine is becoming a ghost town. Unemployment is low because 10% of the population moved out in the past year.

Maine is again on the move, down the turnpike, past the Kittery tollbooths and keep on going south. Uhaul has a problem keeping up with the one-way rentals.

Housing sale in Millinocket. Real cheap.

How true. I was up in Millinocket last summer and noticed a good, solid, working-class house near downtown for sale for $29,000.

Per Baldacci's inauguration speech he "sees the greatness in Maine" and wants to balance the budget and give healthcare to everyone.

The worst part of this is the Nature Conservancy has the mortage of the 400k acres of timberland they own. National Park here we come.

Wish it was happening to jumping Jim Jeffords and Leahy in Vermont along with their openly socialist Congressrat.

This is one small glimmer of hope, as of 5pm today, there was still talk of trying to restart E-Millkt mill tomorrow.
That was the one postponed Monday, when they came up 1.3 million short on restart funds.

I fear this is the beginning of the end of Northern Maine as we know it. National Park is next with a casino at the entrance. Low paying seasonal tourist jobs (counter help and waiting), A couple of federal park ranger jobs. Baldacci is too stupid to see what is happening and is controlled by union hacks, Angus just ignored it.

Hi oz,
Yea, I fear that it will only be 1 and not even 100% sure that will happen.
Iam real worried about the money already owed to woods contractors, won't post it here but it is scary, real scary.
I worked near Comstock Mtn/Bog Brook on the Golden Road today, and alas, all the loaded trucks were headed toward Canada...
Bad as it all looks, we can still hope, and it could still be pulled off, if the right people get ahold of things.

By the time Baldacci's term is over, and with the help of his fellow Rats, northern Maine will be just one big ghost town.

Central Maine next.

But wait - with all that affordable housing in Millinocket, maybe Baldacci can encourage Somalis to move there. Wasn't that one of the touted benefits of the migration to Lewiston - the big boost to the local rental market?

You should send that suggestion to Baldacci's cost saving web sit.

LOL, yes, we can funnel the Somalis up to northern Maine. Then they can bring so much to that community, like they bring so much to the Lewiston community. You know, how they work so hard, and own all this property they pay so much in taxes for, and they can open all of their Somali businesses up there--wait a minute! They aren't even doing that crap here! My bad.

I love northern Maine. I love the whole state. The way it is being ruined, and has been ruined, by idiots like Angus and Baldy makes me so angry I can barely talk about it. I was born here, raised here, and dammit--I will die here. I want to live out the rest of my life in Maine, just like generations of my family before me. We Mainers have got to do something before these cretins utterly destroy our home.

I fear this is the beginning of the end of Northern Maine as we know it.

Thank God we have the Government DFAS Agency up here on the old Loring Air Force Base. We couldn't make it without them.

And the farmers will never quit. They go strong year after year. But you almost have to be born into that. The Canadians love it here, though. Canadians are always over here shopping in northern Maine, so we still must have SOMETHING!

Baldacci will be good to Bangor, his home town.

He'll have to have some place to hole up when the indictments come down or when a howling mob of taxpayers goes for him.
