Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates pleaded guilty today to a petty theft infraction and was fined $100 for trashing 1,000 copies of the University of California, Berkeley campus newspaper that endorsed his opponent.

Bates did not appear in Alameda County Superior Court. His attorney, Malcolm Burnstein, entered the plea on his behalf and paid the fine imposed by Commissioner Beverly Daniels-Greenberg.

Well, well, well. The old Marxist Malcolm Burnstein -- last seen snuffling about the Berkeley Free Speech Movement in the 1960s -- is alive and well and still representing sleazeballs. It's nice to know that things don't change much at Berkeley.

Wish it had been the gas chamber. I guess that punishment is reserved for smokers.

incredible that an adult politicial leader of a mainstream american political party would think it was OK to just go and destroy a bunch of newspapers because he wanted to suppress a point of view. Incredible also that the people of berkley elected him!!

How far we've come, back in the 60's the Berkley campus was very idealistic in its' defense of 'free speech'. But liberals are always good, no matter what they do, they are always good. We know this because the mainstream media and the public schools never say anything bad about liberals. Only outside the mainstream journalists or schools run by right-wing nuts will say bad things about liberals and we know from our education that those people are no good. That is the problem, the liberals are always good, no matter what.
