New campaign in SUV battle
MSNBC.com ^ | 1/8/03 | Dan Lothian

SUVs are in a peculiar position in the American psyche these days. They are at once very popular and also despised; popular for their room, power and safety, despised for their gas-guzzling, more-power-than-is-necessary appetite. Now a familiar political and social commentator has decided the best way to attack SUV drivers is to accuse them of aiding terrorism. It that fair?

Click on the link and watch the video report.

This is a video report on a new ad campaign called the Detroit Project. It is spearheaded by syndicated columnist Ariana Huffington. It will air in the Washington DC area among others and is aiming to make a ridiculous link between SUVs and terrorism. Funny how no other cars run on the same gasoline that SUVs use.

I saw this on NBC last night. It's absolutely disgusting. How about let us drill on our own land to reduce our need for imported oil? The part where the woman says "I hijacked a plane...." is horrible.

DH and I are contemplating buying a new Suburban in the next few months if we can afford it b/c we will soon have another addition to our brood. I think Ariana thinks that I should try and fit all of us into her Toyota Prius.

Commuter with Honda drives 200mi/week at 30mpg.

Home Schooler SUVer drives 50mi/week at 10 mpg.

If both leave for Disneyland on a train at the same time, which one will be demonized in the press?

This must be being used by all activists now. I recently saw a PSA commercial where they blame the kid buying a dime bag of grass as funding Bin Ladan.

Is it just me or is Zsa-Zsa turning into a wacky lefty? It seems that since her husband tossed her aside for another man, she has been starved for affection and has turned to the Hollywood left for comfort.

I don't know about that anymore - I see more SUV's flipped over on the highway than any other cars.

I swear, I am so sick and tired of these holier-then-thou, nanny-busy-bodies trying to tell ME what I CAN and CANNOT do and CAN and CANNOT drive. Until we live in a world where ALL SUV's, cigarettes, alcohol, fast-food, hip-hugger jeans, body piercings, tatoos, meat and R rated movies are made illegal by way of penalty of DEATH, these freaks will not be happy. What is UP with these people??? Time to GET A LIFE.

If you support gun control, you support terrorism. That is fact. The SUV thing is a futile attempt by the left to exploit the emotions of the weak.

That's true but SUV's are top heavy which is why they are prone to flipping. They should correct that. But I have to agree alot of people who use SUV's actually think they are armoured tanks and can drive like a lunatic in them. So you are right - more than likely it is the driver.

As far as supporting terrorism - that's a crock!! I used to have a cadallac and that thing guzzled gas like there was no tomorrow - I was going broke using it.

This is what happens when Arianna Huffington starts "hanging out" with Bill Maher at the Playboy Mansion.

I completely disagree! Most SUVs have a REAL frame, which lowers their center of gravity. It's the inability to control the different wheelbase configuration that causes the neophite driver to have problems. In a crash between a framed SUV and a unibody car .... it's NO contest!!

And if anyone seriously thinks that this bored (and boring), annoying, dilettante owns only a Toyota Prius, then I know of a lovely bridge in San Francisco that's available for sale at a bargain price.

If we drill ANWAR and the Gulf of Mexico, our fuel problems will be solved for many generations to come!

Yesterday I was watching the swearing in of the Senators on CSpan and the Senator from Alaska said she was going to work on that. Maybe by some miracle we can get that passed.
