This is now the 35th poorest city in the nation (once the Queen city now a pauper)...most industry is gone and what is left is getting smaller.. we are an over educated underemployed area..most of my college grad kids are gone..the only ones left work for a regional bank and a human services org
But it is over here..I hate the thought of this story being rewritten in other places..
Where did you work?

now all the rich people are creating jobs in China and Mexiconow all the rich people are glueing pom-poms on their noses.
Both statements have equal documentation, accuracy, and value.
Zero.

401(k)'s won't really benefit other than appreciation in stock prices. These dividends are not taxed until they are distributed and I do not think this is changing.

I was a college student when I lived in Buffalo. Graduated from Buff State in 1996. I grew up in Endicott NY. You know, Home of Endicott Johnson Shoes (where all 4 of my grandparents worked) and IBM.
I worked at TGIFridays for the last 3 of my 5 years in college.
I miss Buffalo in some ways, but not that much. I miss my steak and eggs at Pano's. I miss playing guitar at Merlin's. But I do not miss the weather, the populations virtual "live and die" by the Bills attitude. Nor do I miss their bitching that manufacturing jobs are gone.
Companies have tried to bring operations to Buffalo, and almost without fail their efforts were either fought by the city government (Rat controlled) or citizens suffering from NIMBY.
About a year ago Bass Pro Shops tried to buy The Aud and turn it into a giant showroom. NO! shouted the people of Buffalo. Trico tries to expand and the citizens say NO, so now Trico is considering leaving town. I can't blame them after the hate the people of Buffalo have shown them lately.
One of the stupidest ideas I have heard from the people of Buffalo is that a new bridge to Canada to replace the Peace Bridge is the answer to the citys economic problems! A bridge! Sure, some economic activity will increase. Like traffic to Duty Free. Other says commuter rail and reduced downtown parking is the key to economic growth. Ya, that current "subway" if you want to call it that is an economic boom! Boondoggle is more like it. Others want to develop the waterfront. Great idea. But others are complaining that putting up the buildings needed to do such will "ruin the view"! What do the people of Buffalo want? Jobs and opportunity or a view of lake Erie?
Buffalo needs to do a few things, and fast to have a fighting chance. REDUCE TAXES! All of them. Especially property taxes. And drop the idea of charging people who live in Amherst but work in Buffalo a "commuter tax". Knock Down those damn Grain Elevators! They serve no economic, historical, or developmental purpose. NONE! They are a waste of real estate that can be better used.
CUT THE SIZE, SCOPE, and BUDGET of the government! Big Time! And start electing Republicans!

Trico tries to expand and the citizens say NO, so now Trico is considering leaving town. I can't blame them after the hate the people of Buffalo have shown them lately. That is not true. I was working down the street from Trico a business born here) A large incentive package from state and city was offered to keep them here..they would have given them anything..but the new CEO was not local and did not want to be here..They moved 70% to Mexico ..the rest leaves this year..
It is not a good business enviornment here no question....but most of the companies that left went south of the border..it is about $1 a day..
We have a RINO gov that has increased the deficit so much they are going to raise taxes this year and drive what is left out
I love TGI..and I love Buffalo..snow and taxes and all

You cannot be serious! He touched all the right bases for everyone, including the middle class. As for me, any kind of tax relief is great and, as a retiree, I enjoyed my rebate last time like you cannot imagine. Hey, it's our money, not the gummints!
To: Phantom Lord
The snow removal part of gummint there must be a big spender.

When I graduated Buffalo I knew there was nothing there for me to stay for. And there was even less for me back in Endicott. So I packed up a U-Haul, took the $250 I had in the bank and moved to Raleigh NC. Have not regretted it a bit. It will take an act of God to get me to even consider moving back to NY. Any part of it.
I may have been wrong on Trico, but that is the name of the company that was in my head. What was the large manufacturing company that wanted to expand and the residents complained about the possible increase in traffic and increase in the size of the facility?
To: Phantom Lord
Not Trico..there is NOTHING downtown..and thats where they were..lots of space and easy access to roads..
I have a son in SC he loves it I do not..but I any end up there anyway:>)

But what about the vessel with the pessel? It has the pellet with the poison.
That is one of my all time favorite moveies, and I detest musicals.
To: JohnHuang2
How appropriate that John Edwards is trying to raise the dead.
Oh, yeah -- I am sure I am the very first to come up with that one ;)

[Note: The plan will hold harmless any taxpayer that may be affected by the Alternative Minimum Tax]. Wow. If that's true, I'll start bowing to Bush instead of Mecca (just kidding, but not by much).

I also was owner/landlord by myself for a 5 bedroom unit and worked 12 hour days Saturday and Sunday all summer into late fall at the flea market out in Margate for 14 and 10 years respectively.
