Hello, Everyone--
The deployment of scores of thousands of U.S. troops to the Persian Gulf region is an ominous signal. After killing more than one million Iraqi people through "low-intensity warfare" and economic sanctions during the last decade, the U.S. Government appears ready to launch an illegal, immoral, and imperialist invasion of Iraq.
At the same time, immigrants in the U.S.--especially from Arab, Muslim, and South Asian backgrounds--are facing a growing wave of government repression. Surveillance, profiling, and detentions based on national origin, race, or religion are increasing. Basic legal rights are being denied to more and more people.
The Progressive Workers Organizing Committee believes that all working class, oppressed, and democratic-minded people should work together to stop the war on Iraq and the mounting repression here at home. The Progressive Workers Organizing Committee is sponsoring a march and rally against war and repression on Saturday, January 25. We will assemble in the Fiesta Grocery Store/Dollar Store parking lot at 75th Street and Lawndale, Houston, at 1:30 pm. We will then march down 75th Street to Mason Park. The rally will be held in the front section of the park, which is bordered by 75th Street and Tipps St.
The main "demands of the day" will be: No War on Iraq! Stop Racist Detentions and Attacks on Immigrants! Money for Jobs, Not for War! The rally will feature speakers, musicians, and poetry. We hope you will join us--and bring your family, friends, and co-workers. The Progressive Workers Organizing Committee invites the endorsement and participation of the broadest possible range of organizations and individuals. Please contact us at (281) 534-7638, (832) 498-5795, or (832) 594-7052.

As always, a FReep mail will get you on or off this Houston topics ping list.
75th Street and Lawndale
Given the location, I would probably revert to an anti illegal immigration FReep. Remind to relate a recent language barrier incident in the same area.

Yes, but it's on a weekend. Even better, it's not on a weekend when I'm working. I hope. ;)
My UofH Degree is in Political Science and there were lots of liberal profs. I was just out of the Army and had been an active Republican for ten years when I started there and at the time felt sure I could kick the heck out of the entire Department if need be. I believe I gave several of them high blood pressure and only one (Arab) had the nerve to give me a B.

Well I never saw a fox hawk before ...........
Where on earth is that? Sounds vaguely familiar...like I read it in the "Area Briefs" (local crime) section of the Chronic-Ill. Sounds like maybe if we FReep, I'd want to go with another FReeper (safety in numbers.) Anyone live in the west (Beltway 8 and Briar Forest-ish) area?
