[history]
During his years in Congress, Dick Armey was a firm and incisive defender of conservative values. Individual constitutional liberties against the government were very much among them. In his December 6 farewell address at the National Press Club, the retiring Republican Majority Leader warned of the "awful, dangerous seduction" of sacrificing our freedoms for safety in our war to defeat "this insidious threat that comes right into our neighborhood."

This is appropriate, given the number of police abuse stories lately.

Maybe this is the answer for what to do about the ACLU. Takeover from within.

An attempt by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) to convince the Senate to stop the TIA dragnet failed. However, not only did the American Civil Liberties Union support EPIC's endeavor, but also Phyllis Schafly's Eagle Forum, the Free Congress Foundation and the American Library Association.I guess Phyllis Schafly's conservative credentials are now suspect, since she sided with the ACLU on an issue. /sarcasm

I watched Phyllis Schafly on C-Span yesterday. It seemed like she was taking pains not to tell how or what she felt about W's policies.
On foreign policy she said that she hoped our gov't would find a way to take care of the Iraq situation without going to war.
On the domestic front, she couldn't stop from ridiculing then 'leave no child behind' compassionate policy. She also had a good word or two about the gov't's new police powers.

"This is appropriate, given the number of police abuse stories lately."If this board is any kind of a reliable sampling of what we have between us and a police state, we are already cooked.

All this administration opposed was making it a cabinet level position. They wanted the program badly, they just didn't want cabinet level oversight. Let's not re-write history this soon.

Armey Schlafly et al may be right on some issues but on this one he like others is painfully wrong, unaware, misled, or just plain ignorant when it comes to individual rights during war.
Individual rights were also threatened during the Cold War but thankfully helped to preserve our nation from communist infiltration. Again, they are threatened and again during a wartime situation in case Armey and the rest haven't noticed.

The ACLU has, over the years, lost lots of members with its selective backing of the PC portions of the Bill of Rights. I'll believe that they are something besides a bunch of left-wing schills wben they come out in favor of the individual rights interpretation of the 2nd Amendment - and I mean with more than a few words. I want them to actually bring a case against, for example, Chicago or DC for violating the 2nd Amendment rights of their citizens. I'm not holding my breath waiting for this to occur - because all they are is a bunch of left-wing schills masquerading as a pro-civil rights organization.

Bush Policy's Newest Critics - Conservatives
It's not the left that is sounding some of the harshest criticism against the President's tactics in fighting the war on terrorism, it's many of the nation's most solid Republican conservatives.
SNIP
Goldberg cites such prominent conservatives as former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr who has joined liberal American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as a consultant - and former House Minority leader Dick Armey now negotiating with the ACLU - as two of the top GOP critics of what they see as the administration's dangerous slide towards big brotherism.
Also among those expressing similar concerns are such staunch Republican conservatives as Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly, who Goldberg reports is worried that some of the Pentagon programs are dragging the U.S. towards "Big Brother government as imagined by George Orwell.
"We don't want the government to monitor our daily activities," says Schlafly. "Technology is moving so fast. When they're able to combine our medical records, travel records, education records, gun purchases, credit card records, this is total information that I don't think the government should have about law-abiding citizens if we value freedom."

No argument from me. For every one case they take that advances liberty, they take ten soley to offend Christians, and restrict liberty. They do what the officers of the ACLU, and their donors tell them to. We need to be those people.
