[Long Cut]

News on the Extended DVD is out already! Among the highlights to be found at www.chud.com:

There will again be 30-35 minutes of extra footage;

The battle at Helm's Deep may get an "R" rating after the new footage is included;

More footage of Gollum will be included.

This is great news. I knew they filmed around 20 hours of footage at Helms Deep, I also saw a picture of Gollum/Smi before the ring in one of the books, so figured that was in there. The info about Treebeard was good, as the Ents had a bigger part/chunk of the book (I found it amusing those who haven't read the trilogy complaining that the Ents seemed to be in there as a "pro-environment" object) Hopefully some more scenes with Faramir and the ending since there seemed to be several cuts around there.

I was surprised by it the first time, wondering if it was a good idea to poke fun... Then the second time, I realized PJ had made very similar jokes to the ones we would have made in the hobbit hole, about something we love. It is an affectionate "poking fun".

Worse, when I remove the DVD, the bit map or JPEG file shows only black. I've tried grabbing the whole screen, only the DVD window, a rectangular area, etc., but nothing seems to work. Where am I going wrong?

I had the same problem trying to do a screen grab of the matrix. From what I remember it was a built in "prevention" that Microsoft put into their software. BUT...if you go here:

You can download a trial version of a dvd player that has built in screen image saver. It works!

"Dead Alive", according to its own literature, used 400 gallons of stage blood during its last 15 minutes. even though it was done for laughs, as sort of a black comedy, it STILL induces cringing in even the hardiest horror/zombie fans, who of course consider it a classic.

Just imagine Jackson's talent, used to direct a movie about flesheating zombies,

...on a budget of about a buck-fifty.

I've got "Dead Alive" on DVD, and it's my favorite film to show to my friends who have gotten jaded by the usual horror movies. It always causes their jaws to drop (just not into their soup, like Nurse McTavish's...).

It's probably the goriest movie ever made. Just when you think it can't possibly top itself, it does -- ten more times.

You'll find yourself saying "I can't believe they did that" pretty continuously for the last 45 minutes of the film.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of us that are fans of the movie that are not regulars on the Hobbit Hole thread. I love having a few of these in the regular forum and since the Two Towers is in the news these days it is most appropriate that they be allowed to remain.

Those were the Haradrim, men from the lands South of Mordor, who have become allied with Sauron and are marching to do battle for Mordor.

and who were the similar looking guys going into Mordor (that almost discovered frodo and pippin Sam? [Hair])

Those are called Easterlings... Also a race of men marching to the aid of Sauron.

PJ didn't expand on them too much, and Tolkien didn't go to a lot of detail explaining those races to us... A little, but I don't think PJ felt we needed to know, yet. More will undoubtedly be explained about both of them in RoTK. For now, all we need to know is that they are working for the bad guy.

That was Haldir, the very snooty elf that the Fellowship met when they entered Lothlorien in the first movie, remember him now?

The NYT review is one of the very few tepid reviews. They see LoTR as terribly bourgeois. All that "good and evil" stuff is just so unsophisticated.

Ha! This is one of the great cinematic acomplishments of all time. It takes a very interesting but very difficult book, and preserves the story while creating a visualization that is "right" to almost everyone who watched.

Tolkein is what Harry Potter fans can graduate to (oddly, the Harry Potter movies fail to capture the wit of the books). And maybe some of them will read his translation of Sir Gawain or maybe even his recently discovered translation of Beowulf.

ROFLMAO! When that priest went kung-fu on some zombies, with that battle cry,("I kick a$$ for the Lord") I just about busted a gut. For those with the right kind of sense of humor, it's terribly funny.

And I can easily see it being the bloodiest, goriest movie ever. Not the most violent, however, as it WAS done for laughs.

That honor has to go to "Cannibal Holocaust", which got its director arrested for murder. To get aquitted, he had to produce in court the actors he was alleged to have "killed". It's got to take top "honors" because it was played straight, not humorously.

We have our own Topic, under Dailies, where all the LoTR threads are really easy to find later in one place.

The few that are over here, are harder to find, because we depend on knowing what titles or keywords might have been used.

Star Wars; but you're right. For the extent of the battle scenes there really wasn't much blood.

Yes! They are better literature than either LoTR or Potter, but they are overtly a Christ allegory for children. The last book is so intense I could hardly get through it. But I did let my daughter read it. The Silver Chair is a wonderful story about the way evil gains influence.

Clive Staples Lewis was a WWI combat veteran who saw things we can only imagine. He had strong reasons to think there is no God, only to later become an important Christian philosopher. His books deserve a cinamatic treatment as good as LoTR. I hope they get it someday soon.
