Anti-Castro group claims shooting of spy in Cuba

An anti-Castro paramilitary group claims it shot -- but did not kill -- a former spy who lived in Miami and was linked to the Cuban military's shoot-down of two Brothers to the Rescue planes.

Rodolfo Frometa, director of Comandos F-4, said his group was involved in the Dec. 19 shooting of Juan Pablo Roque. He said Roque was in serious or critical condition at a Havana hospital, but the incident could not be independently confirmed.

Roque's bodyguard was killed, as was the gunman, identified as Ramón Sosa, 32, an operative in one of Comandos F-4's clandestine cells within the island, Frometa said.

''We are the only exile organization that has publicly declared being after Juan Pablo Roque to execute him for the crime he committed and for having laughed at this country,'' Frometa said. ``We have been following his paces. We know where he works, where he lives, who his lovers are, because our intention is to eliminate him.''

Well, there's military and then there's miltia. It was reported in the Miami Herald, so I felt it wasn't classified.

It's difficult to say this, since I'm far from a fan of Castro, but...

What they're doing is no worse than what Arafat's cronies do to Israelis. What this "Comandos F-4" did is wrong, it's illegal, and they should be sent to prison. If they had evidence of involvement, it should have been forwarded to law enforcement. If LE didn't want to use it, then just smear it all over the local Cuban-American newspapers and make the guy want to crawl back to Cuba.

I want a free Cuba as much as any American, but what they did is murder at best and terrorism at worst. We can't allow it in polite western society, and these guys should fry.

Cheers,
ODM

I hear what you are saying. I understand. However, I do not think you can compare it with the Arafat terrorists because they are going out in the streets and shooting or blowing up any ordinary Cuban citizen that passes by. They went after the master spy who was here in Miami who orchestrated the murders of the Brother to the Rescue pilots. Israel does this all the time when it goes after mastermind Palestinians. The US (rightfully so) does it going after masterminds in other countries that are unable to be apprehended. However, I entirely respect your opinion that it was the wrong move to make. I may agree. But I just think you cannot compare this to the Arafat cronies.

I disagree, Roque is a combatant and a spy and he got what he had coming to him. May he rot in hell.

Ok, after re-reading your post I get the impression that you think that this mastermind spy was living here in Miami. LE could not do anything about it because he fled back to Cuba. It is well known that before the planes were shot down he left the women he married here (she had no clue he was a spy) and he fled back to Cuba. Living a relatively good life (he got rewarded pretty well) while the people he helped murdered were still murdered.

Thanks dfwgator. I just want to make it clear that this is not like the Arafat cronies. It cannot be compared to Arafat whatever you think of the rightfulness or wrongness of the act.
