Nine Suspected Al Qaeda Arrested in Pakistan
Thursday, December 19, 2002
AP - LAHORE, Pakistan Police arrested nine suspected Al Qaeda operatives in this eastern Pakistani city on Thursday, including two Americans and one Canadian, Pakistan's information minister said.
The two Americans and one Canadian are of Pakistani origin, said Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. Pakistan Television reported an exchange of gunfire during the arrest.
"We got information about these people and today the police went there and made these arrests. We can say they are suspected Al Qaeda," Rashid told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
He said some of the men might have been smuggling weapons for terrorist attacks.
All nine men were from the same family, he said.
Among those arrested was Dr. Javed Ahmad, who was taken from his home in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, said a senior Interior Ministry official.
Security agents and FBI officials searched Ahmad's home for at least two hours. Also arrested were his two sons, two brothers, three nephews and one uncle.
Two of the men are naturalized Americans and one a naturalized Canadian.
FBI agents were with the police when they raided Ahmad's home. They seized four computers and several compact discs. It was not clear what they expected to find.
Ahmad's other family members have denied he or his relatives are involved with Al Qaeda.
Ahmad is the second Pakistani doctor to be arrested for alleged links to Taliban and Al Qaeda fugitives. On Oct. 21, authorities arrested Dr. Amer Aziz, a British-trained orthopedic surgeon, and held him incommunicado for a month.

Pakistan Police Arrest Suspected Militants Thu December 19, 2002 08:17 AM ET
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan has arrested between six and nine suspected militants including three foreigners near the eastern city of Lahore, although it was not clear if they had links to al Qaeda, the government and police said on Thursday.
"We have arrested six to eight people including
two Americans and one Canadian national," Information Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad told Reuters, adding it was not yet certain whether they had links with Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.
An intelligence source said the police raiding party included agents of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and added satellite phones were discovered in the house raided overnight in a small village near the border with India.
The source said nine arrests were made, including a medical doctor who had traveled to Afghanistan frequently, even after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
But Ahmad said he was not aware of any doctor being arrested, or if the suspects had links to al Qaeda.
"We don't know whether they have any links with al Qaeda," Ahmad said. "They may have links but we cannot confirm it now."
Local police said there was an exchange of gunfire at the time of the raid, although nobody was injured. The raiding party took all the men in the house into custody, they added. In October, Pakistani authorities working with the FBI arrested a prominent orthopedic surgeon, Amir Aziz, near Lahore on suspicions of helping al Qaeda.
Aziz, released after a month, said he was questioned by the U.S. agents on his visits to Afghanistan and contacts with the ousted Taliban and bin Laden. Aziz has denied any wrongdoing.

All nine men were from the same family, he said. I'm curious as to what type of "family" we're talking about here.
I guess that depends on the definition of "family".

Kinda sounds like the "Ahmad Family"

Kinda sounds like the "Ahmad Family" hehe..thanks.
I'm mixing my threads this morning but thanks for the clarification.
I get a little suspicious when I see "naturalized" to describe Americans, especially of mid eastern origin. I know, very un-pc and probably everything else but that's just the way I see it.
I wasn't like that before 9-11.

I wasn't like that before 9-11No problem-o. I think that speaks for a lot of us here. In fact, I'm developing an extreme distrust (is that a word?) for anything sporting a sheet or a towel.
