Report: Al Qaeda tried to get bail for B.C. man

CTV News Staff

An Egyptian man says Osama bin Laden sent him to Vancouver to post bail for a jailed member of the al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

Abul-Dahab, who is currently in the custody of Egyptian police on terror-related charges, was one of two men sent to Canada to secure the release of Essam Hafez Marzouk.

The revelations are contained in Abul-Dahab's confession to Egyptian police, a transcript of which was obtained last week by the SITE Institute terrorism research group in Washington, D.C.

Marzouk was arrested at the Vancouver airport in 1993 for carrying a false Saudi passport. After spending nearly a year in jail, he was released and his claim for refugee status was accepted.

Canadian and U.S. intelligence agents later discovered that Marzouk was a veteran of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, where had fought alongside bin Laden. A member of the Egyptian wing of al Qaeda, known as Al Jihad, Marzouk also ran a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan.

He is considered a suspect in the 1998 bomb attacks on U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Marzouk left Canada in 1997 to fight against the Serbs in Kosovo. He was later discovered in Azerbaijan and is currently in jail in Egypt.

Last fall, a search of an al Qaeda safehouse in Kabul turned up stationery belonging to Marzouk's B.C. business, 4-U Enterprises.

The man sent to Vancouver to post bail for Marzouk, Abul-Dahab, was involved in the financing of al Qaeda operations around the world.

A sales representative for a chemical company, Abul-Dahab described his trip to Canada as a "jihad mission."

In his confession to Egyptian police, he claimed he withdrew $3000 U.S. from a California bank account and gave it to another operative, Ali Mohamed.

Both men then travelled to Vancouver and reportedly gave the money to Marzouk's lawyer, Phil Rankin.

However, in an interview with The National Post, Rankin said he does not recall receiving any money from Marzouk's colleagues.

"I got paid but I can't recall how the money came to me, but it didn't come to me from that guy," said Rankin.

You cannot understand how 9/11 was able to happen without understanding the what happened in the Balkans.

Destro, you have to understand one basic thing about Yugoslav Wars and Balkans:

presence of Mujahedeens in Bosnia is not a CAUSE but a CONSEQUENCE of the Yugoslav Civil Wars!Do you understand that? You must, please!

If we want to be objective about Yugoslav tragedy than we must agnowllege the fact that Yugoslav battlefields were full of foreigners! On all sides. At the beggining,in Croatia ,there was a few hundreds(no more than 1500 I believe) volontiers and mercenaries from UK,US,Germany,Holland,France...In the town of Osijek there was an International Brigade under the comand of a Spanish mercenary.Brigade in name ,company in strenght. Some Romanians and Hungarians also had fought on their side.Usuall motive, money or they were just war junkies!Dogs of War!

On the Serbian side were some Russians,Ukrainians and a few hundred of Don Kozaks! In Bosnia,I mean.It was only natural that Muslims will come to help their Muslim brothers. So ,Al Qaeda did not start wars in Yugoslavia,ok?We,former Yugoslavs did!

But,since 1989 and establishment of a Muslim SDA party, number of Arab and Pakistanis visiting Bosnia had increased dramaticaly.Iranian presence had become very visible. And they are there to stay!

Further more,American propaganda had made Al Qaeda omnipotent which is untrue. If a Muslim joins a mujahedeens and goes somewhere to fight for his "brothers" that doesen`t mean that he immediately belongs to that organization.Let me remind you that Muslims were involved in terrorist activities against Izrael and the West for more than 30 years, long before Al Qaeda egzisted. So,lets keep a cool heads and think rationaly, and not follow daily politics.Lets have some perspective(historical) if we want to have a productive debate.

To tell you the truth, weather you like it or not,I am terrified and discusted by a anti Muslim mass histeria!I don`t find Islam to be murderous religion, especialy in the light of our utterly hypocritical treatment of "good "Muslims and "bad" Muslims! And Western habbit of dealing with the consequences instead the causes of someone`s grievances.

Hoplite, you see what being objective looks like? So,read and learn!

You must think I care about Yugoslavia? I have never cared nor will I ever care for Yugoslvia and the nations that emereged from it because I am not a Serb, nor of Yugoslav extraction. I can only care about my country.

My concern is what my nation, the USA did in the Balkans. The jihad came to the aid of the Bosnian Muslims and did not cause that war? Yes and no. Osama did not start that war but the party that ruled Bosnia was every bit as Islamist in origin as those found in the Muslim world. I also do not blame the Serbs for wanting to live within the nation they were born in and failing that not live in nations run by SS Einsatzgruppen offspring.

My motivation comes from what I described in the last statement. If not for the al-Qaeda element, Kosovo and Bosnia for me would have been just another messed up occupation like Haiti that never directly affected my life. The way the air war was conducted in Yugoslavia, the violations of domestic and international law was bad enough, but in the collusion with the jihad increased the probability of 9/11's success. I want heads to roll even if they be of the American extraction and the error we made as a nation corrected, that includes those of the jihad that entered by the Croatian backdoor while NATO looked the other way.

No Destro,I don`t think that you care about Yugoslavia or the Serbs.I appritiate that you care for your country and that you disagree with her bombing foreign policy. But,I just pointed out tpo you some inconsistences and inacuracies in your posts in a fair and friendly manner!

As you can see,no reply from our adversary Hoplite!None expected, anyway.I appritiate your posts and efforts,so don`t get cross with me,ok?

Alia Izetbegovich and his SDA is a party modeled on Pakistani example, and they are so guilty ,beyond words!Even the co-founder of the party left him after two years! When I hear that Izetbegovich and SDA are for multietnic Bosnia I want to throw up!Oh,I can tell you stories about them,my dear friend. Some other time, maybe.
