Their so-called smoking gun theory boils down to this: the pope in 1999 recommended that a defrocked priest ought not return to the area where he committed his offenses. They take this eminently sensible advice and use it as a hammer to bludgeon the pope. Just so everyone understands whats going on here, what the pope did was to say that a former priestsomeone who had been returned to the status of a laymanought to start a new life in a new location. Isnt this what parole boards recommend to released inmatesthat they not return to the neighborhood that nurtured their maladies? Shame on Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas Reilly and others for disseminating this mindless charge.

The REAL answer: only truth has rights.
That's the shortest version of the answer, but it is akin to the "yelling FIRE in a crowded theatre" obiter dicta regarding the First Amendment.
It is also the basis for tort actions on libels and slanders.
THus, while Jack Chick may have cojones, he must also tell the truth--or he has no rights.

Let us not confuse the Church of the Roman Hierarchy with the Body of Christ. (I'm sorry: You clearly have confused them.)
I firmly eschew the false doctrines of the former, but --to your deep chagrin, no doubt -- I gladly own that I am a member of the latter, having been purchased by the Blood of the Cross -- by grace through faith alone. (It is a grace thing; sadly, I fear that you who would likely seek to earn indulgences wouldn't understand.)
Go right ahead: Cling ever more firmly to your Pope's crozier and his Magesterium, if you believe he and they will save you. I will cling to the cross. Like Paul, I know nothing before you but Christ, and Him crucified.
Pity I'm not a Hollywood director. You are an "Inquisitor" from Central Casting. LOL. (All we'd need is a little makeup, perhaps!)
Sadly, most of them are likely suffering in hell, wishing like the rich man in Luke 16, that someone would warn their progeny of the truth.

Yes. And, from what I can tell, you and others in this forum apparently have few moral quibbles about slandering Chick and other evangelicals.
Your post, boiled down seems to be saying: Catholics have freedom to preach their doctrines. All others are immoral.
The spirit of the Inquisition lives on.
In other words. You don't know the Bible well, so you choose to be dependent on protectors of homosexuals to tell you how to interpret it?
A pity.
Would you mind showing me in Scripture where people are DIScouraged from opening the Scriptures for themselves?
Some no doubt think that, but many others simply find Chick too blunt for their tastes. (I know. I have talked to them. Does that trouble you?)
Some Protestants are Catholic-oriented. Others are simply afraid of the Catholic Church. Others, in the spirit of Martin Luther -- such as Jack Chick -- tell it like it is.
Let me state for the record my view that, just because the Public Relations Department of the Roman Catholic Church says that Chick cannot be believed hardly makes him a liar.
You haven't given us your rendition of: "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" in Biblical Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. Since you do not depend upon "the traditions of men" including presumably translators of unknown integrity, competence and character, prove it.
Also you have admitted to a weakness for Jack Chick, the Alan Ginsberg of theology perverters whose silly comix HOWL!
Your ancestors would be soooooo ashamed. You must not have gotten along with them since you are so eager to assign them to hell.
You mean we don't really worship Baal and there isn't a mainframe in the basement of the Vatican on which we keep all the names of all the Protestants?
Your theology and your manners and your knowledge are equal to each other in their low-rent nature and almost as pathetic as Jack Chick's but I am sure you are working on it.
"The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." Your translations in Biblical Greek, Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic, please. Put your translations where we can all see them or we have to conclude that you are a slave of the traditions of men. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!!!!
Much the same as they do with the Church ... decrying it as defunct or passe and insisting it butt out until it's time to excoriate it for not averting World War II by taking on Hitler and "pulling the world's chestnuts out of the fire" (as LaBelleDameSansMerci put it once).
He probably protests too little. Thank God he does protest. What is at stake is absolutely the most valuable institution on earth: The Roman Catholic Church. Those outside the fold fail to appreciate that. Their failure does not alter reality. If you think that the existence of despicable perpetrators of despicable sins among clergy who abandon their vows for the sorry pottage of faggotry, or the cowardice of craven bishops who cover up such despicable sins and play musical chairs with the perverts, is going to affect the faith of any adequately catechized Roman Catholic, you are wrong. The Mass is still the Mass. The sacraments are still the sacraments. The truth of Catholicism still is and always will be the Truth.
Folks want to judge the Church by those who have rejected her instead of those who live by her precepts.
Typical.
Hear hear.
I pray such a thing never happens but hope that Catholics have the fortitude to reject utterly the deathist pseudo-science and false charity that would cause them to falter in defending the dignity of life in word and deed should the Pope fall unconscious before his death.
If you do not read the original manuscripts, you are at the mercy of the integrity, competence and/or character or lack thereof of others. We Catholics have no problem with depending upon dependable Magisterial Authority (which YOU call the Traditions of Men) but there are not 2 in one hundred thousand of you who can translate the Scriptures that speak to you so clearly. You can choose any of a myriad of translations. The new KJV, the new, new KJV, the KJV so new that KJ and his translators would surely not recognize it and the "Good News Bible"< and other modernist abominations. p> In fact, except insofar as it may differ from the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church in its translation, I personally prefer the majesty of the original King James translation of the Bible complete with what y'all please yourselves to accuse of being Apocrypha. The King James is the one genuine contribution of Protestantiusm to Western Civilization along with a few hymns. We are indebted to the Stuart monarchy for a translation that sounds like the Voice of God might be imagined to sound. I would not touch the "New Jerusalem" translation with your ten foot-pole.
It is not irrelevant that you rave on as to YOPIOS but haven't a clue as to the Scriptures that you cannot translate. While you badmouth the Traditions of Men, you adhere to traditions of men while denying that you do so.
If the pope cannot translate any of those three languages (make no assumtion that he is unfamiliar with Greek at least), he never claimed that he could. He has a trustworthy staff and nearly 2,000 years of verrrrry trustworthy predecessors who did understand and give authoritative guidance. The pope, not you, is guaranteed the guidance of the Holy Ghost in all matters dogmatic under the usual conditions. Nice try at the end. Why should I descend into the murky depths of Do-It-Yourself-Theology? I am Catholic. That's why God invented the papacy and the Magisterium.
I probably will be lambasted for this but I find Novak smarmy as a rule. This mea culpa is too little too late, given his own participation in the sexual revolution ... normalizing it somewhat in the same vein as my confessor the other night.
A Monsignor I knew who was good friends with him gave me a book he wrote with his daughter who -- from what I could stomach reading -- must have been college-age going on five or six.
He has always rubbed me the wrong way. I won't go so far as to say he's the Horowitz of AmChurch ... tripping the Ramparts one day, turning on the revolution the next ... but he does seem to tack whichever way the wind is blowing regardless in what direction the truth lies.
