PILOTs, Military whizzes, Know-it-Alls: question for you

This question arises elsewhere and I'd be most grateful for good information. What's the fuel burning rate for a modern fighter jet? I suppose we'd need a couple of figures, for maximum power and for cruising. I'm just looking for ballpark figures so don't much care which U.S. fighter or which branch of service -- but pick one that's operational right now, e.g., ready for Iraq.

P.S. I've heard some figures I cannot believe, so I'll be the more interested in a correction. Thanks in advance.

The U2, i believe, burns a gallon a minute at cruise and that is considered thrifty...

an F15 burns 10000 pounds/hour at cruise...

And jet fuel weighs what, 4.5 or 5 pounds per gallon? Any figures for going to the afterburner?

It's not a fighter and it's not all that modern, but I've seen a B-52H burn anywhere from 8,000 to 44,000 lbs./hr., depending on gross weight, airspeed and configuration. The question you asked probably doesn't have a single answer.

I dunno. Why don't you look it up and enlighten us. You might try starting here. Somewhere I think I read that a cruising 747 gets about 100 miles/gallon/passenger if close to fully loaded.

In full augmentor, depending on which engine and inlet you have, you'll run between 38,000 to 48,000 pounds per hour in the F-16.

The F-100-229 in the F-15 will run around 50,000 pounds per hour in full augmentor - so with two engines, you're burning around 100,000 pounds of fuel per hour.

Ask and ye shall recieve...

Guy that flies with the company that I fly for is in the Air Guard and flies the F-15.

According to him here’s the skinny on the F-15.

At 10,000 ft. MSL it burns 1800 pounds per minute, yes a minute!
At 30,000 ft. MSL it burns between 400 pounds per minute or 24,000 pph.
At 40,000 ft. MSL it burns right at 200 pounds per minute or 12,000 pph.

He’s got about 800 hrs in the F-15 and is looking forward to rearranging some Iraqi real estate in the very near future.

Jet A =6.75# per gallon

He said that once you select full burner the fuel burn goes to something like 90,000 to 100,000 pph.

Amazing

I found the fuel consumption figures amazing.

The question I have is what did a P-51 consume at cruise? How about a Jap Zero? Thanks in advance

I find that hard to believe. You would need +125,000 to go a mile. 1.25 MILLION gallons to go 10 miles.

When stationed at Minot I performed in the base little theater group. Our leading man was a youngster from the fuels squadron. His job was to take the temperature of the fuel as it was delivered to the base, (often a very long tank car train since we flew 15 B-52s 15 KC-135 and 18 F-106s at that time.

Long story but Jet A fuel is temperature sensitive and when Uncle buys fuel at a northern tier base he calculates the weight per gallon and converts based the temp of the fuel.

big BTW this leading man would finish his hitch, move to NY and end up co-starring on the New Bob Newhardt show! I carried him off the stage at the end of Godpell singing "Prepare Thee the Way of the Lord". Cool! (God I love to tell war stories!!)

What's the fuel burning rate for a modern fighter jet?

"It depends."

At low altitude, in afterburner: an F-15 Eagle will be out of gas in a very few minutes.

At what altitude? Makes a difference.

You could have been a nice guy and stated why you asked the question.

I did a double take watching a satellite program recently which flat out stated that the aircraft in question on full afterburner it would consume all its fuel in under a minute!
Nope, can't remember the aircraft, but I did not imagine it.
