I believe that the GOP Senate majority is safe for the next two years.
One way or another this is how it'll work out. If for no other reason than that team Bush will not accept any other outcome. They've been on the outside looking in and they're sick of that. They want those backlogged judicial appointments to ROLL! Other important votes too. Hardball was played against Kofi Annan/Blix when they withheld the Iraqi document dump and it's going to go down the same way in our Senate.

If Lott has shown ANY cajones in the past, Republicans would be lined up in support, and this would be over. He didn't, and now he suffers from his OWN weakness.

What is your point?
Some black people support Lott, so the rest of us should shut up? I dont think so.
To: TLBSHOW
I'm sure that Carville and Hillary knows who will be next. Cranking up the ole' fax machine as we speak.

I just asked you to name some Black Republican Office-holders who support Trent Lott today. There aren't any black Republican officeholders, in the US Congress.
To: KansasConservative
I wonder if Nickles was sent out to start this last push to remove Lott? I wonder that also.

I would love this to blow up in the Dem's face by getting a REAL Republican Majority Leader. Yeah, they ought to be careful; they might just get what they asked for, but it may not be what they really want!

I find this an interesting comment since there hasn't been an election for the senate majority leader.

With all due respect to Trent Lott, he oughtta seriously consider standing down and accepting a lesser appointment within the GOP Caucus, not becuz I think he is a racist--he most certainly has not demonstrated that in the past, IMHO--but becuz he has marginalized himself and will not be the strong leader the GOP needs for the next two years.

"In an indication of White House wariness about getting squarely behind Lott, sources said Lott sought statements of support last week from national security adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State Colin L. Powell but was rebuffed. Both are African American. Some White House officials said it was clumsy of Lott to ask." Do you have a link to the article?

Gramm never could be a Majority Leader, either. Each man has his own talents, and Lott just happens to work well with others, while Gramm can be Gramm.
Genghis Khan would be a rotten Senate Majority Leader ;-)

IMO most likely is that a new vote for Majority Leader will have Lott re-elected by a small majority of the caucus.
And that Nickles knows this.
The vote is just an opportunity for the Senate Reps to "chastise" Lott for his remark.
We don't want a leadership fight mucking up the Senate at this time with our small and divided majority.
Heck, I don't think Nickles, or any conservative, wants the aggravation of dealing with the liberal northern members of our caucus.

Zell Miller has his own 'sheets' problem.....he was secretary of state for Lester Maddox.

Lott has stated he would quit the Senate if pushed from Senate leader. Good Grief, I hope not! MS has a RAT Governor right now!! Trent HAS to be smarter than that!

Do you think ole Trent would be content with exile in Mississippi? Maybe he should buy Jefferson Davis old plantation?

The race pimps see an opening to damage the GOP, and the GOP is allowing them to do it. And the "canonized conservatives", who've hated Trent Lott since impeachment, see an opening to kick him out the door. If he goes out branded a "racist," they could care less. These are sinkspur's words and they are 100% correct. Wake up people!!

What could Lott do to redeem himself? He could call off his planned "Apology Tour", and assume his place on the back bench of the Senate this afternoon.

Seems to me I read that when he was in college Lott did nothing to protest his fraternity's (Sigma Nu?) policies on race. I was in college back in the early 60's--and some "recruiters" for the sorority I had joined made some really IGNORANT comments concerning allowing "Jews and Negroes" to join. The comments were--paraphrasing--"we must stop the cancer from spreading". My "soror" and I sat there--and after a few seconds we looked at each other and basically said "we're outta here!!!" And we--I can't even remember the right word--maybe de-activiated??--but we left that sorority then and there. We weren't "activists"--but like a lot of "white folk" back then we could not for the life of us figure out why some people had to look down on other people for the color of their skin or the place where they were born or anything they had absolutley no choice in.
We were also--being young--very idealistic--and Democrats! But, as you point out--people can mend their ways--and now as a Conservative, who respects the hell out of someone like Clarence Thomas--I just cannot overlook Lott's remarks. They stem not from stupidity--but ignorance! The same kind of ignorance those sorority "sisters" voiced. And that ignorance --and all the "isms" it creates--must not be IGNORED. It must be faced and fought--and hopefully this time--defeated!

"Lott is a huge liability for the Republican party, better to lose the senate than to have him on board." Hey Newbie TROLL, you win the TrentLottAward fer the most asinine statement on the thread...don't let the door hit ya on the butt on the way out!!

That was my point as well. Gramm was never enamored with Washington, or all the things associated with it, Lott is.
